Francis John Chapman II or "Frank" was born 26 Feb 1839 in Liberty Co. Georgia and was married three times. His wive and children are discussed below. He died 13 Jan 1934 and was buried in Baggs Cemetery, Long County, GA.

Frank was a member of Jones Creek Baptist Church, Altamaha Lodge #227 F.& A.M. and a Confederate soldier. He was a Lieutenant in the "Altamaha Scouts", Co. I, 25th Ga., Infantry Regiment. He participated in the Battle of Noonday Church and other battles of the Atlanta Campaign before he was seriously wounded. His father, John Chapman, went to the front in Atlanta and brought him home in a horse cart. The trip from Atlanta to their home in McIntosh Co. required thirty days. With them they brought a sharpshooter's rifle that Francis John had captured from a Union soldier who had carried it through battles in Tennessee and Mississippi - Mount Zion, Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Farmington, Iuka, and Corinth. It became one of his most prized possessions and was used after the war for hunting wild game.

This photo from 1900 or 1901 is the Masonic Lodge in Johnston Station, McIntosh County, Georgia that became Ludowici., Georgia in 1905. It is the country seat of Long County today. Johnston Station was a station on the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad., named for Allen Johnston one of the railroad builders. Two Confederate Army Vets are pictured in the photo, Francis John Chapman and Thomas Jefferson Chapman.

The masons identified in the photo are: Standing, Seventh from Left- Dr. David W. Baggs, MD, the Community Doctor. Kneeling , 2nd from Left- Mr. Harry G. Williams, the Lodge Secretary. Kneeling 3rd from left- Francis John Chapman, Lodge Treasurer. Kneeling, 5th from Left- James Madison Twiggs Smith, Junior Warden. Kneeling 6th from left (With Hat) Thomas Jefferson "Bud" Chapman, Worshipful Master. Kneeling 1st from right- Thomas Edgar Houston, Senior Deacon. Altamaha Lodge was chartered in 1858, and has been in continuous activity since that time.

The first wife of Francis John Chapman II was Matilda Baggs, daughter of William and Charity Hope Baggs, and granddaughter of immigrant Archibald Baggs and Hanna Esther Dennison Baggs. Matilda was born 16 Sep 1836 in McIntosh Co., GA. She died 16 Sep 1868 in Johnston Station, Liberty, Georgia and was buried in Jones Creek, Liberty, Georgia. Matilda married Francis John CHAPMAN II on 27 Sep 1863. They had one child:

  F i Frances Matilda (Tillie) CHAPMAN was born 22 Aug 1868 in Liberty Co., Ga.. She died 25 Jul 1897 in Liberty Co., Ga. and was buried in Jones Creek, Liberty, Georgia.

His second wife, Hester (Hettie) Coats Baggs Johnston, was the widow of Isham L. Johnston and the daughter of Archibald James Baggs, Sr. brother of William Baggs. "Hettie" was born 25 Mar 1841 in Liberty Co., GA and married Francis John CHAPMAN II on 22 Jan 1874. She died 28 Sep 1879 in Liberty Co., Ga and was buried in Baggs Cem., Liberty, Georgia.

Frank and Hester Coats Baggs had two children:

  F i Nancy Elizabeth Coats CHAPMAN "Lizzie" was born 24 Sep 1874 in , Liberty, Georgia and married John Seaborn MALLARD. She died 5 Oct 1951 in Jacksonville, Duvall, Florida and was buried 9 Oct 1951 in Jesup, Wayne, Georgia.
  F ii Hettie Alice Leigh CHAPMAN "Alice" was born 30 Nov 1876 in Liberty Co., Ga. and married Thomas Augustus PARKER on 17 Apr 1901. She died 14 Jan 1975 in Waycross, Ware, GA and was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Ware, GA.

His third wife, Hettie Elizabeth Baggs, was a daughter of William Riley Baggs, son of Archibald James Baggs, Sr. Sarah Smith was mother of Hettie. Hettie was born 13 Jul 1861 in Liberty Co., GA. Hettie married Francis John CHAPMAN II on 29 Aug 1886 in By J.G. Norris, M.G. Hettie died 17 Jul 1912 in Liberty Co., GA. and was buried in Baggs Cem., Liberty, Georgia.

Frank and Hettie Elizabeth Baggs had six children:

  M i Decarlos Cohen CHAPMAN was born 8 Apr 1887 in Liberty Co., Ga. He died 15 May 1972. Decarlos married Nora SIMMONS on 1911. They had no children.
  M ii Francis John CHAPMAN III "Frank" was born 13 Dec 1889 in Liberty Co., Ga. and married Louise (CHAPMAN). They had one child. He died 21 Mar 1985 in FL.
  M iii Archibald Baggs CHAPMAN "Archie" was born 17 May 1894 in Liberty Co., Ga and never married. He died 14 May 1940.
  F iv Blanche Eleanor CHAPMAN was born 8 Oct 1896 in Liberty Co., Ga and married Henry Vaughn FITZPATRICK. They had no Children. Blanche died Jul 1995 in Atlanta, Fulton, GA.
  F v Annie Louise CHAPMAN, "Loui" was born 20 Apr 1900 in Liberty Co., Georgia and married George W. ZORN and had one child. Loui died 25 Sep 1999 in Baxley, Appling, Georgia.
  F vi Hettie Estelle CHAPMAN, "Estelle" was born 4 Oct 1903 in Liberty Co., Ga. and married Charles Ernest TUTTLE on 27 Feb 1924. Estelle died 19 Aug 1984 in Ga. and was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Savannah, GA.
