Note: Richard Osburn moved to Scott Co., KY from Abbeville Co., SC in 1795 or 1796. When Owen Co. was formed, Richard lived in that part of Scott Co. that became part of Owen Co. Richard Osburn had a brother John who was an early resident of Pendleton Co., KY in the section that became Grant Co. in 1820 and then made part of Owen Co. John was born October 11, 1773 in NC. From the census information on Richard and the information on John, we know that these Osburns were in VA, then NC, then SC, before finally coming to KY. While nothing is proven about the ancestry of Richard and John, it seems likely that they were related to the other Osbornes that also moved from Abbeville Co., SC to Scott Co., KY. It is known that these Osborne families were descended from the Osbornes that were in Baltimore (now Harford) Co., MD by the late

Richard's and Sarah's daughter Charlotta married Noah Clifton 1809 in Scott Co. Marriage information from a statement made to the court's by Charlotte (widow). She provided marriage information for widow's pension, saying they married in her parents home.  Charlott was last found on the 1840 census and died October 22, 1876 in Owen Co., no records of where or whom she lived with after 1840.

Farmer value of property $400
Married January 9, 1839
Children: Sarah 11. James 8, Nancy 6, Mary 5 and William 1

Notes: The middle initial "S." is for Strother, by which William S. Osburn was also known. It is uncertain who the parents of William S. Osburn are. Strother was born about 1818. The 1820 census records for Richard Osburn (179/156) do not show a son who would have been born about that time. The 1820 census records for Elias Osburn (183/216) show 1 male child under age 5. Unfortunately, that son is usually presumed to be Wesley Osburn, who was also born about 1818. Still, there is nothing proving that Wesley Osburn is Elias' son either, so Strother could still be son of Elias.

Farmer value of property $400.00
Married  May 26, 1822
Children: Andrew 20, Mary 18, Susan 16, Martha 13, Cerilda 10, Malvina 4, John 6 and William 4

Notes: Doctor Franklin was son of Richard Osburn (179/156) and Teresa was daughter of Bartlett B. Mason (179/149). It is to be emphasized here that "Doctor" was just a part of Frank's name -- he was *not* a physician.

D.F. Osburn left Owen Co. in the strangest circumstances. His father Richard died in 1851, but before dying, sold his land to David Clifton Jr.(178/141). D.F. and Teresa lived on Richard's land and continued to do so even after Richard Osburn died. David Clifton initiated a court case against D.F. to kick him off the land. However, when the sheriff went to serve the warrant, he could not locate D.F. and served the warrant on Teresa Osburn instead. After this there are instances where Teresa signed consent notes for some of D.F. and Teresa's children. In one circumstance, Teresa is even referred to as the "widow Osburn". In 1853 she purchased land in her own right. From this, one would presume that D.F. Osburn had died. Wrong. Owen Co. land records beginning in 1867 show that the family, including sons-in-law, had moved to Fountain Co., IN. Tax records in Owen Co. show that most of the family had moved by 1860. Examination of the 1860 census for Fountain Co., IN showed, surprise, not Teresa living in Fountain Co., IN, but Doctor Frank instead.

On 6 Apr 1862 Doctor Franklin Osburn married 2nd to Nancy Templeton, in Fountain Co., IN. D.F. died in March 1881 in Fountain Co., IN. There is still no information on why the sudden moved to Fountain Co., IN occurred or why Teresa Osburn stayed behind and everyone was left with the impression that D.F. had died.
