This Thomas Thorne was disowned from the Religous Society of Friends for participation in the Revolutionary War. He was an Aide to George Washington & led the forces across the Delaware River & destroyed the Hessian Army.

IT IS THIS THOMAS THORNE & HIS WIFE REBECCA STEWART/STUART (HAVE SEEN BOTH SPELLINGS) WHO ARE THE PROGENITORS OF THE VIRGINIA/ WEST VIRGINIA THORNS.

ALL OF THE WIRT COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA THORNS SEEM TO TRACE THEIR ANCESTRY, BACK TO HIM THRU HIS SON THOMAS; HIS SON MICHAEL, ALSO, HAD CHIDREN IN WIRT COUNTY BUT IS SAID TO HAVE DIED IN ARKANSAS. THERE IS A LARGE GROUP OF THORN/E'S IN ALABAMA, MISSISSIPPI & ARKANSAS ETC THAT MAY TRACE THEIR LINE BACK TO WILLIAM THRU MICHAEL & SARAH (SURNAME
UNKNOWN).

Thomas Thorn's brother, James, was married to Ruth Harrison, could this be part of the link that led these New Jersey Thorne's to Virginia????

The 1850 Census of Wirt County, West VA, shows Michael Thorne & Sarah plus Thomas Thorne & Mary (Jones). Michaels wife Sarah is shown as 56 years with a birthplace of PA. Their oldest child Elizabeth is age 20 with a bp of VA; Thomas Thorn's wife Mary is shown as age 53 with her birth as Virginia Their oldest child is also age 20 with a bp of Virginia. Therefore they were at Thorn's Run, Wirt County, before1830!!

He was married to Rebecca Stuart (daughter of William Stuart and Rebecca) on 25 Sep 1785.  Rebecca Stuart was born on 25 Sep 1765.

Jean (she refused to use her first name) was a Cheer Leader at Fritchton, HS in Fritchton, IN. She wanted to be a nurse/flight attendant but went to business school instead.

Tho she wanted more children, she only had me (and I was enough!). Throughout her life, she was in good health until about 3 years before her death from a massive stroke. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. She was a vital, strong woman who raised me mostly alone. During my high school years, she worked two jobs to make ends meet. About 5 years before her death she was finally able to stop working for the first time in her adult life and she enjoyed her leisure.

WILLIAM THORN OF FLUSHING, N. Y., 1645.

No positive clue has been found in any of the Massachusetts towns where records have been searched, as to the pre-Flushing residence of the William Thorn, who in October 1645 was one of the patentees of the site of the town of Flushing, New York. There was a Mr. Thorn living, very early, at Lynn, Massachusetts, and there are several referencest o persons of this name in the records of what was once known as Roxbury, Mass., and also in records of at least one other Massachusetts town. The  person first referred to, as living at Lynn, should not be confused with the William Thorne made a freeman at Lynn, in May, 1638, and who had land at Lynn, granted to him in the same year. No facts, now attainable at Lynn, establish the identity of this William Thorne just named, with the William Thorn of Flushing, N. Y.,1645. The latter spelled his name Thorn, a custom which his descendants almost without exception have followed. Their signatures to documents of record amply establish this fact. There was, however, on Long Island, N. Y., a family spelling their name Thorne, unrelated to William Thorn of Flushing, N. Y. (1645). It is more reasonable to conclude that this family was of kin to the William Thorne made freeman at Lynn, Mass., in 1638, who some Massachusetts genealogists think moved to Long Island, N. Y., in 1642, than to conclude that William Thorn of Flushing, N. Y. (1645) was identical with him. There was at that early period a lack of uniformity in the spelling of family names, the same person not always spelling his family name in the same way (see Part IV, Appendix). Hence the fact that William Thorne, of Lynn, Mass., 1638, spelled his name differently from the mode of spelling the family name adopted by William Thorn of Flushing, N. Y., 1645, does not, as far as the objection rests upon a difference in spelling, necessarily involve the rejection of the theory that the William Thorne of Lynn, 1638, and the William Thorn of Flushing, 1645, were one and the same person. Although Boston, Mass., is the port where at that early period William Thorn would have been most likely to land, it is not at present possible to certainly affirm that he did land there, owing in part to the fact that the official records of the Custom House at that port, for the period from 1628 to1780, are alleged to be missing. (See Part 1, Appendix.) The trend of the inferential evidence is favorable to the theory that the William Thorn who was in 1645 one the patentees of the site of the town of Flushing, N. Y., was a native of England, who on some date between 1629 and 1645 (quite possibly 1630) landed at some point within the present limits of the municipality of Boston, Mass. The name is spelled in this record Thorn, in accordance with the usage of nearly all of the descendants of William Thorn, of Flushing, N. Y., 1645. An exception is made in the case of one family in deference to what is believed to be the wish of the members of it. Question 7 on page 44 of this Record affords opportunity for the presentation of further evidence relative to the original ancestry of William Thorn, of Flushing, N. Y., 1645.

THORN FAMILY. William Thorne, of Dorsetshire, England, the pioneer ancestor of the family, was made freeman at Lynn, Massachusetts, May2, 1638, and in the same year had tracts of thirty and ten acres of land apportioned to him. Hon. William Kieft, the Dutch governor of Long Island, October 19, 1645, granted to William Thorne and seventeen others the original patent of Flushing, Long Island. In 1657 he was one of the proprietors of Jamaica, Long Island. His children were William, John, Joseph, Samuel and Susannah. He was buried in the burying ground of the Friends at Flushing, Long Island. Nothing is known of the wife of William Thorne except that her name was Sarah.

John Thorne, second son of William and Sarah Thorne, was made freeman of Connecticut, May 12, 1664. He died 1709. He married, at Flushing, Mary, daughter of Nicholas and Sarah Parsell, and their children were: John, Hannah, William Joseph, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah.

John Thorne, Jr., eldest son of John and Mary (Parsell) Thorne, married Catherine (???), who bore him the following children: John, Mary, Elizabeth, Deborah, Joseph, Samuel, Benjamin, Catharine, Sarah, Thomas, Rebecca and Hannah. John Thorne and his wife was named in the census of Flushing, Long Island, in 1698. In the records of the township of Chesterfield, Burlington county, New Jersey, it appears that in 1710 he was a township officer and held various offices until his death in 1737; he was survived by his wife, who died in 1766. He first purchased a farm east of the village of Crosswicks, which he sold, and August 17, 1717, purchased a farm of one hundred and eighty-one acres west of Crosswicks, a part of which is now (1907) in the family, having descended in a direct line to Barton F. Thorn, deceased, and is now the property of George Barton Thorn. From some unknown reason this branch of Thornes dropped the final "e".

Joseph Thorn, second son and fifth child of John and Catharine Thorne, was a farmer and weaver. He held various public offices in the township from 1727 to 1753. He married, in Friends Meeting at Crosswicks, New Jersey, 3d mo, 1723, Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Foulke, and their children were: Elizabeth Joseph, John, Thomas and Michael.

John Thorn, second son of Joseph and Sarah (Foulke) Thorn, married, in Friends Meeting at Crosswicks, 4th mo., 1753, Diadamia, daughter of Isaac and Lydia Ivins, of Georgetown, Burlington county, New Jersey. Their children were: Daniel, Enoch, Isaac, John, Louis Thomas, James and Anthony. It is said there were four daughters, but their names are not on record.

John Louis Thorn, fourth son of John and Diadamia (Ivins) Thorn, married, 3d mo., 1785, at Trenton, New Jersey, Tacy, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Skerum. Their children were: Abraham S., Diadamia, Mary, Elizabeth, Tacy, Edith, Daniel, Hannah, Huldah and John S.
