The  Warta  Family

BOHEMIA 1881

HAID (Bor) in 1881

John Warta, Sr. Passport Photo, 1919

John Warta was born 1 August 1865 in Haid. He was the son of Augustus (Gustav) Warta and Katherina Gottlick. The family emigrated to the US, settling in the Scotch Plains/Plainfield area of New Jersey. John married Mary Louise Morel of Scotch Plains. They had three children all born in Scotch Plains area: Leonie, Clara and John "L". John became a naturalized citizen in 1887 (Elizabeth, NJ) Circuit Court. The youngest child, John L.,was born on 10 August 1891. While John L. was still quite young, his mother died in an influenza epidemic.

John WARTA
Naturalized US citizen: March 2, 1887 in the Court of Common Pleas, Elizabeth, County of Union, state of NJ (Jas.Vosseller, Clerk)

In December, 1987 Leonie Louise Warta CONNOR wrote down her recollections of her early family life for her youngest brother Frank:

"Grandpa was born in Austria, it was then called Neuhof - but on todays maps it is called Hayd - also on his passport. The Wartas were neighbors of the Eylardi. That is where he knew Johanna & Marie Eylardi- Grandpa's mother, Katherine, had another son before she married Augustus Warta. We remember him as Uncle Frank. He had one arm when we knew him, had lost the other one in a train accident. We have a third cousin in Westfield who has a clipping about Augustus (not Complimentary). Grandpa's family settled in Scotch Plains - guess he went to school there. The school was on Park Ave. in Scotch Plains. The family homes were located on Rt.22 - Dad showed them to us before they were down - This is where Grandpa grew up. When he was old enough (he was 10 or 12 when he came to this country) he went to work in a Mill close to Rt.22 .It is now a vacuum cleaner plant. It is set down in a gulley on the road from the Blue Star Shopping Center and Berkeley Heights Road. Dad's mother, Mary Louise Morel, was from Scotch Plain too. Remember Uncle Louis, Mary's only brother. The parents were from Normandy in France. I do not know the year that Grandpa and Mary Louise were married but they had three children in Scotch Plains. Clara, Leonie and John (your Dad). As far as Dad could remember his mother was a cook in a home in Berkeley Heights. He recalled his mother going down the hill to get water from the well and have to carry it back to the house. He also remembered his Morel Grandmother sending him upstairs to see his mother after she had died - Evidently she had pneumonia which developed into T.B. - was a sad memory for him. I do not know when Grandpa went to Hayd Austria and married Johanna - have no records. If Winifred had, they are lost - Dad had always had very good memories of her - Before the families moved to Penna. Dad remembers going to N.Y. with his father to his office- took the train out of Westfield - It is quite probable that Grandpas move to Penna. was through his NY office - he went to work in the Penna Portland Cement Co. I do know that they lived in a house next to the canal - had a picture of Dad in the front yard as a teenager. There was always a blank after that. I do know Dad left home about the age of 16 or 17 and went to work on the railroad. He never said why he left -I do have hazy memories of Grandma Johanna...she died in the flu epidemic of 1917. Grandpa was devastated. Evidently we moved in with Grandpa - Jack was the baby at the time..Uncle Ben Debbie had married Aunt Clara...she died a year later when Winifred was born. That left Mother, Dad and Grandpa to bring up Winifred - hard job - as far as Grandpa was concerned she could do no wrong - Dad remembers some hard times from that period. What year Grandpa went back to Austria and brought Aunt Marie back - We moved to a house in back of the mill - Grandpa had a big house on Main Street in Northhampton - Aunt Marie raised Winifred. Very difficult. She was so spoiled by this time - I was a year younger by this time. When Mother and Dad were first married and came to Penna to live - Virginia, Jack and I were born in a little yellow and brown house back of the mill after Aunt Marie arrived. Dad and Mother met and married in Stevens Point Wisc. and were married there - came back to Penna to see Grandpa who talked Dad into staying and going to work in the mill. Mother was heartbroken....We moved to NJ after Dad had asthma so bad. Dad was in an electrical accident in the mill - can still see him putting ointment on his arms and hands....Mother's parents were born in Warsaw, Poland - Emigrated to the US and moved to Wisconsin in a conestoga wagon."

Johanna Eylardi arrived in New York on 7 June 1895 aboard the SAALE out of Bremen. The Eylardi family were neighbors of the Warta family in Haid. It is not known when John married Johanna, but it was prior to the Census of 1900. In that Census, John and Johanna Warta "Wife" and the three children are living in Allen Township, Northampton Borough, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. John's age is listed as 33 and Johanna's as 29. John's ocupation is "Apprentice Chemist" with the Cement Mill.

In the Census of 1910 the family is still residing in Northampton. John's occupation is now listed as "Assistant Superintendant Cement Mill". It is thought that Johanna died sometime in 1917.

John Sr. returned to his birthplace in 1919 his passport states "Personal Business". It seems that he was returning to wed Marie Eylardi (Johanna's sister). John and Marie (Mary) arrived in New York City on 29 December 1919 from Trieste aboard THE PRESIDENT WILSON

In the Census of 1920, John and Marie (Mary) are residing by themselves in Northampton where John's occupation is listed as "Asst.Superintendant Cement Works"
