Wife's Notes
My parentage for Mary is strictly speculative. I don't even know if her maiden name was Okey or Balding.
I have James Baldin listed, because I found an IGI record for the three of them, but htere are also Okey's in the same area at that time.

CRUTCHFIELD
Richard Crutchfield and wife Hannah, from Kent, England, were the immigrants of this family, settling in Gloucester County, Virginia. Their children were Thomas, Fortunas, William, Rachel, Philip and Elizabeth.
William Crutchfield (1683-1759) was born in Gloucester County. He is believed to have married m. (1) Eleanor ______ and (2) a widow, Jane Stapleton Norman (c. 1715 - ?). He perhaps married a third time as his Caroline County will named as executrix Rachel Crutchfield. Other researchers have provided a list of his children: William, John, Richard, Edmund, Stapleton, Mary, Henry, Jane, James, Margaret, George and Thomas.
George Crutchfield was a minor (under 14) when his father William died in Caroline County, Virginia in 1757. His first guardians were Ambrose Lipscomb and Richard West. He was transferred to his older brother Stapleton in 1767. A patriot of the Revolution, his life before 1810 is a matter of conjecture: it was previously believed that he arrived in the Cumberland settlement of Tennessee in 1781 with the Donelson Flotilla accompanied by two brothers, John and William. Among these voyagers were also the two Overall sisters, Mary and Nancy. It now seems more possible that he was the George Crutchfield who purchased 135 acres in Halifax County, VA from William and Jane Lawson in 1784. In 1810 he was in Smith Co., Tennessee when he paid $400 to William Hogan for 210 acres and 25 poles on September 3, 1810. He also purchased land from Silas Williams in 1816. George's wife was Dorcas ______ (Dicey). Their children were Thomas, Samuel, John, Lettice and Mary. George's will was probated in 1824. He and several members of his family are buried on the Kelly property on Hogan's Creek Road about 3 miles south of Highway 70 in the 14th District of Smith County. Only a few broken stones remain on this original site of Hogan's Creek Community Church where there were once 75 to 100 graves and many engraved memorial markers. [We are indebted to Richard Crotwell of New Bern, NC for new information about George Crutchfield's life which has given us a more accurate history of the family.]
Samuel Crutchfield (1789-1832) was born in Halifax County. He married Nancy Allen Maholland(1790-1858). Their children were William, Dorcas, Sally, Lucy Smith, John, and George. He died in Wilson County, TN. Their handsome brick home burned some years ago and the site, as well as the abandoned family cemetery, is now impossible to locate.
Their daughter Lucy Smith Crutchfield (1823-1901) married Asbury Overall(1820-1904) and they made their home in Franklin, Tennessee. Unfortunately their lives were disrupted and their property lost by the tragic events of the Civil War battles in their community and the defeat of the Confederacy.

Notes for Child: Samuel Crutchfield
The following from NC State Records: Mr. Person from the Committee to which was referred the Petition of the Inhabitants of Davidson County, Reported as follows, vizt: That the following persons, vizt: (many names listed here) each and every one of them, receive a grant of six hundred and forty acres of land, including their pre-emptions, without being required to pay any price to the State for the same, provided that every person receiving such grant shall pay the office and surveyor's fees for the same. And the committee are further of the opinion that the Heirs or devisees of (several names listed here including that of John Crutchfield) who were killed in the settlement and defense of the said County of Davidson, receive grants for the same number of acres in the same manner, and on the same terms and conditions as the former.

The following is from papers of J.M. Cooper: 3 - SAMUEL CRUTCHFIELD of Richard, married Sarah Shearrin and resided in Granville, then Bute, then Warren County, NC, by division. He died testate in Warren Co., NC, in 1795. Sometime after 1800 Samuel's widow Sarah moved to Tennessee, Davidson, then Rutherford County, by division, where her will was recorded in 1826. I am searching for the relationship between George Crutchfiled of Wilson Co TN and the James Crutchfield mentioned in the forum. George was an early TN poineer, husband of Dorcas E____ and father of Samuel (1790-1832)who married Nancy Allen Maholland. Thank you for any help.
George Crutchfield (1750?-1824), a TN pioneer, has always been considered by our family to have been from Caroline Co. VA and a son of William Crutchfield (c. 1710-1759) and Jane Stapleton. I would like any information to confirm or correct this information. George's son was Samuel (1789-1832) who married Nancy Allen Maholland (died in 1858). Their daughter, Lucy Smith Crutchfield (1823-1901) was my great-grandmother. Any information about this line of Crutchfields will be greatly appreciated.
You are the first Crutchfield researcher I have found who has listed a Samuel Crutchfield. The one in my line is Samuel (1789-1832) of Wilson Co. TN who was the son of George (c. 1750-1824) and Dorcas "Dicey" E. George was a pioneer in Middle TN. - possibly with his brothers John and William. We think these brothers to have been the sons of Wm. Crutchfield and Jane Stapleton of Caroline Co. VA. This Samuel married Nancy Allen Maholland (1790-1858). They are buried near Shop Springs in Wilson Co. Their daughter, Lucy Smith Crutchfield, was my great-grandmother. The Crutchfield name is honored in our family and we would like to know more about the earlier generations in America. I suspect the William of Carolina was the first. Thank you for corresponding.

Research Notes for Child: Dorcas "Dicy' Crutchfield
Old family notes passed down to me by my father have this written at the bottom "Crutchfields descent from James Crutchfield who received a Patent of Nobility in 1625 in VA. He and his wife were forced to flee England." Another note said "Dicy was named for her Hoskins grandmother" I assumed that meant my Dicy Williams Taylor d/o Silas Mercer Williams. I believe that somewhere else I have a possible wife for this James, want to think it was Stuart, but not sure. I'll dig deep and see if I can come up with it. je94926@navix.net
