ELIAS HARTFORD SETTLED HERE 67 YEARS AGO
  
                  Elias hartford pre-empted the Swan King farm in 1801.  He
                  built a log hous and lived there for 28 years when he sold out
                  to the father of Swan King which was 39 years ago.  His son
                  Jasper, father to Allen, Tom, Charles, and James helped to
                  construct the orginal grade to the U.P.R.R. from here to
                  Silver Creek, NE.  As a boy of twenty it is told that Jasper
                  drove twenty yoke of oxen on the old time grader with a young
                  fellow by the name of Henry Johnson, the son of another early
                  settler by the name of Eli Johnson, who had a claim about a
                  mile south of the S.G. Payne farm.   Just before Jasper had
                  homesteaded what is now the Hubbard farm south of town, but
                  lost his claim when away working for the railroad.  He helped
                  to build the dam to the first mill in Waterloo. Elias Hartford
                  moved from Valley to Valparaiso 39 years since and died in
                  1894. Elias son, Jasper Hartford died many years ago; his wife
                  died only last fall. The grandsons of the old pioneer, Allen
                  James Charles and Tom are all well known in Valley.  Allen
                  Hartford was born about 60 years ago on what was the Gus Payne
                  farm now owned by Oscar Jacobson. Elias and Thomas were twins.

                  Edisay: Mr Fouts died leaving Edisay a widow, Elias married
                          her and raised the Fouts children as his own.
