YOUL
John Youl was born in Stirling, Scotland on February 14, 1803. He and his wife Mary (nee Anderson born at Logie, Clackmannanshire, Scotland in 1803), together with their children, set out on the ship "Australia" arriving in Australia on September 20, 1853. They lived in Emerald Hill and later Bontherambo, near Rutherglen.
Their children, all born in Stirling, were:
- Jean Youl (1826-1849) who died in Alva, Scotland
- John Youl (1828-1829) who died in Stirling
- Janet Youl (1830-1890) who married William Grey in 1855
- Mary Youl (1833-1897) who married Matteo Marassovitch
- Helen Youl (1835-1877) who married William John Bilsborrow in 1858
- Margaret Youl (1837-1872) who married James Smith in 1858
- James Brown Youl (1839-1922) who married Agnes Forsyth. They had 17 children. Agnes died in 1903 and James married Frances Kingsley (nee Fleetwood) in 1906
- William Youl (1842-1917) who married Jessie White Veitch in 1867
- Marjory Youl (1844- ) who married David McClellan (he came out to Australia with William Bilsborrow from Bury, Lancashire in 1854)
John and Mary both died on August 27, 1882, 10 hours apart.
A book entitled "John Youl, the immigrant, 1803-1882" by John William Youl has a detailed account of the Youl Family history and can be found at the La Trobe Library in Melbourne.
