Was born in Vermillion county, Ill., in 1832, and moved to Pike county, with his mother, in 1846. He remained at home until 1851, when he married Miss L. A. Chamberlain, daughter of Mrs. Rachel Chamberlain. After his marriage, he rented land upon which he moved and commenced farming, doing the best he could, until 1856, when he purchased a good farm on section 27, in Davis township, which is now one of the best improved farms in that township, a lithographic view of which is shown in this work. Mr. Martin is one of the most energetic and prosperous farmers in Pike county, and is highly esteemed by his neighbors for his many virtues.
