| James Humphrey was born in England in 1731, and died in Philadelphia, PA., in June, 1825. He lived in Philadelphia
during the Revolution and served as a private in Captain John Hewson's Second Regiment of Foot
in United States Philadelphia Militia. James is the ancestor who assisted in establishing American Independence.
There is no record of his wife's name. His son, John, married Ann Powell Moore; son James, married Susan Witledge.
James died in 1854 and Susan died in 1867. They had a son, James, born in 1816 and died in 1880. He married Martha
Hawkins. She was born in 1820 and died in 1882. They had a son, George Livingston Humphrey, born March 7, 1844.
And died Sept. 30, 1893. James and Martha Humphrey came to Vera from Kentucky in a covered wagon. Their son, George, a farmer, married Elizabeth Waugh in 1871, who had come from VA. In a covered wagon with her parents to Vera. The George Humphrey home built in 1888 is on Highway 54 about three miles east of Bowling Green, MO. It is still a pretty house. George and Elizabeth Humphrey had nine children: Lillian, Carrie, Elizabeth, Benjamin, George Ann, Virginia, Martha, Maude, and an infant daughter who died at birth. Lillian Humphrey, [1872-1952] married Len Murphey, a farmer. They resided at the Humphrey home place and after the death of her parents they took over the care of her orphaned brother and sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Murphey had three children: Marie, Lyna, and Raymond. Marie married Burkette McPike and they had one son, Edward. Edward married Virginia Summers and had two children, William and Richard. William married Donna Brown. They had one child, Shawn, Richard married Carolyn Gough, and had two children, Todd and Tim. Lyna Murphey married James McPike and had one child, Jean Ann. She married Richard French, an airline pilot from Middletown, MO. They have 2 daughters, Susan and Dixie. Raymond Murphey married Elizabeth Mackey. Carrie Humphrey, [1874-1941] married William Hemphill. He died in 1897. Then she married Charles Dawson. He died in 1911. Then she married Oliver Chandler, a farmer from Middletown. They had one son, Richard, who married Myrtle LeeMasters in Bowling Green. They have three children, Harold, Larry, and Martena Elizabeth Humphrey married Tobe South in Louisiana. He was employed at Stark Bro's. Nurseries. Benjamin Humphrey was born in 1878 and died in 1923. George Ann Humphrey born in 1880 and died in 1972, married John L. Thomas, Pleasant Hill, Ill., and had four children: Elizabeth, Leon, Lillian, and C. H. [Nealy], Leon, a farmer, married Carol Guthrie and had three children: Jackie, Carol Ann, and Meribeth. Jackie Thomas, a farmer, married Shirley Plattner. They had three children: John, Catherine, and Sarah. John married Debra Taylor. They have two sons, Jeremy and Jason. Catherine married Mike Rayner, a farmer. They have one son, Matthew. Sarah Thomas married Bret Lipcamon, a farmer. Carol Ann Thomas married Myrl Shireman and had three children: Steve, Jeffrey, and Brock. Meribeth Thomas married Terry Smith and has two sons, Gregory and James. Leon Thomas was killed in New London, MO., where he was living. Oct. 22, 1976, when a truck load of corn turned over pinning him under the truck. Lillian Thomas married Lee LaDow. They had two children, Sidney Lee and Scotty Ann. Sidney Lee married Linda Mueller; they had two children, David and William. Scotty married Wayne Rieckhoff; they have three children, Scott, Lea, Anne, and Stacey. Scott married Kim Davis. Nealy Thomas married Bessie Clark; they have two children, Sandra Jo and John Nealy. Sandra married Herman Suhling and has a daughter, Debra, who married Rick Retherford. They have a daughter, Amanda Elaine. John Nealy married Maybelle Hill Buchanan and has one son, John Nealy II. Virginia Humphrey, [1882-1966] married Charles Harris and lived in Bowling Green. They had three children, Louis, Mildred, and William. Louis married Jean Hansen; had two daughters, Virginia and Jean. Mildred married Joseph Meyers. They have two daughters, Barbara and Kathryn. Barbara married Lawrence Warner, has three children: Steve, Janie, and Carolyn. Kathryn Meyer married Ronald Shugart. They have four children, Sheryl, Steve, Scott, and Shara Lee. William Harris married Virginia McCurhorn and have five children, Sandra, Gail, Susan, Mary and William. Martha Humphrey, born in 1884, married Benjamin Schroeder, a railroad agent; had two children, Lucille and Harold. Lucille married Ralph Haas; had a daughter, Judith. Harold married Maureen Brunkhorst; had one son, Jon. The Ben Schroeder family lived in Curryville. John married Kay Goettel. Maude Humphrey married Captain W. J. Moore, Louisiana; and had two children, Gladys and Robert. Gladys married K. K. Schopp. They had four children, Thomas, Kathryn, Steven, and Patricia. Robert Moore died at one year of age. Kathryn Schopp married R. G. Ebling. |
