Sir Robert Wyther1
M, #7961, b. circa 1150
| Birth* | circa 1150 | Sir Robert Wyther was born circa 1150 at Pendleton Hall, Lancastershire, England.1 |
| Marriage* | | He married Joan de Bostock, daughter of Sir Adam de Bostock Knight of Davenham.1 |
| Note* | | Sir Robert Wyther "The Reverend Reginald F. Bigg-Wither, Rector of Wonston, Hants, England, published in 1907 a book giving the History of the Wither family in England. He called his book MATERIALS FOR A HISTORY OF THE WITHERS FAMILY .... The name Wither is an English name of great antiquity, of early Anglo- Saxon origin, appearing in various documents as in a charter of AEthelread, dated A.D. 1005, when one of the witnesses signs his name as Ego Wi(th)er minister. In the Domesday record (1089) the name is shown as a tenant prior to that date. The name shows no prefix suggesting that it was not derived from a place, as so many names were. This indicates that the name was personal. * * * While the name "Wither" is found as early as 1089 in the Domesday record as a tenent prior to that date, it is not until the time of Henry II (1154- 1189) that a continuous record of the family is established. Abstracts from ancient documents (1005-1413) are given in the appendix to the Wither family (1907). This shows the holding of land by persons named Wither in many counties in Great Britain. The definite record of the Wither family begins in Lancaster in the time of Henry II (1154-1189) with ***SIR ROBERT WYTHER, Knight, of Pendleton Hall, Lancashire, and of Halton, Cheshire, Seneschal to Roger de Lucy, Constable of Chester (1179-1189), who married Joan, daughter of Sir Adam de Bostock, Knight,of Davenham, County Chester."1
