William Wither1
M, #7949, b. 1483, d. circa 1543
| Birth* | 1483 | William Wither was born in 1483 at Cheshire, England.1 |
| Death* | circa 1543 | He died circa 1543 at Cheshire, England.1 |
| Note* | | He WILLIAM WITHER, son of Roger Wither and Alice Modsley, his wife, was of Cheshire in the beginning, but, later was in Lancashire, where he paid the fines due to the Lay Subsidy in 1543. ***WILLIAM WITHER, son of Roger Wither and Alice Modsley, his wife, of Frodsham, County Chester, later of Lancashire, took up residence in the section of this latter county which had so long been the seat of his ancestors. This was in the last part of the reign of Henry VIII. The history of the townships within the ancient parish of Melling testify to this and give interesting details which throw light on the old Saxon stronghold which was the home place of the very earliest families by name of (Wyther) Wither. "***WILLIAM WITHER probably married in Cheshire before 1543, and was the father of Bryan Wither, of Arkholme, who died 1591, Thomas Wither of Farleton, died 1594, and of William Wither who was living in 1596." [p 9] In the HISTORY OF THE TOWNSHIP OF ARKHOLME, in the County of Lancaster, compiled by Colonel W.H. Chippindall, Manchester (1931) under Brownedge we quote: 'Brownedge is a small farm situated due north of Gunnerwaite in the north-west corner of the township.' It appears to have been a holding of a branch of the Widder, or Withers family of Arkholme and the Lay. Subsidy of 1543 lists that one WILLIAM WIDDER of Arkholme and Cawood with L6 worth of goods on which he paid 2s 6d. WILLIAM WIDDER on the 11th of October, 1596, signed the Administration Bond of Adam Storr's estate. Of his demise we know nothing; there is a will of an Agnes Widder, widow, circa 1623, bond dated 31 Jan 1623/4. She mentions her eldest son John, who signs the bond and two younger children, Brian and 'Elizabeth, wife of James Eskrigg.'" CONFLICT: Pedigree III lists Brian Wither (d bef 1633/4) as the spouse and father of this family. [p 16]1 |
