LEOMINSTER -- Norman E. Girouard, 83, of 36 Dudley St., died Monday, July 8, in the Keystone Center, 44 Keystone Drive, after a short illness.

He was born Jan. 6, 1919, in Leominster, the son of Albert and Amanda (LaLonde) Girouard, and had lived here all his life.

Mr. Girouard worked for the former Foster Grant Co. for 46 years, retiring as a purchasing agent in 1981.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Girouard was a third-degree knight of the Knights of Columbus, Leominster Council 406. He was an avid reader and loved art, music and gardening.

He leaves a son, Douglas N. Girouard of Leominster; three daughters, Judith A. DeCarolis, Norene E. Levine and Jacqueline M. Rainville, all also of Leominster; a brother, Albert Girouard of Brewster; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and four nieces and nephews.

His wife of 53 years, Arlene (Melanson) Girouard, died on Aug. 24, 1996.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the M.A. Simard & Son Funeral Home, 14 Walker St.

Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home are tonight from 6 to 8.

Arlene (Melanson) Girouard, 78, of 36 Dudley St., a onetime legal secretary, died Saturday in Leominster Hospital after an illness. She leaves her husband of 53 years, Norman S. Girouard; a son, Douglas E. Girouard of Leominster; three daughters, Judith A. DeCarolis and Norene E. Levine, both of Leominster, and Jacqueline M. Rainville of Fitchburg; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was born in Leominster, daughter of Henry and Helen (Douglas) Melanson. Mrs. Girouard was a legal secretary at Gettens & Long, a local law firm. She also worked at Leominster District Court. She retired in 1978. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Church and the Societe St. Jean Baptiste. The funeral will be held Wednesday from M.A. Simard & Son Funeral Home, 14 Walker St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Cecilia's Church, 180 Mechanic St. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. A calling hour is 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
