Alice Caroline Mallard

  General Notes:

Alice was the fourth of eight children, and was born in Sydenham Christchurch. She held strong political views and was a staunch tory.She was a very stern woman and her grandchildren knew to be on their best behaviour when visiting.
Apparently she was also a talented singer.
Alice was a very frugal house wife, she kept her family fed and clothed through the depression years of the '30s by creating aprons from sugar bags, handkerchiefs from salt bags and shirts from flour bags, she even managed to get the branding off them.
Fruit for the family came from an orchard of apple, quince and pear trees in the back yard of their home. Eggs were supplied by ducks which were raise at thieir home as well.

Alice married William James Girling, son of William James Girling and Charlotte Reedman, on 24 Sep 1908 in Wellington New Zealand. (William James Girling was born on 19 Mar 1887 in Napier Newzealand, died on 10 Apr 1935 in New Plymouth New Zealand and was buried on 11 Apr 1935 in Te Huni Cemetary New Plymouth New Zealand.)
