Robert may have been shipwrecked on the Tasmanian coast in 1894.
News paper reports on the wreck of the barquentine "Indiana" on 29 June 1894,list Robert Girling as the Mate.
The Indiana hit a rock and was later beached, all the crew were rescued

He was pilot and at times acting harbour master at Adelaide from about 1907 until at least the 1930's.
I wonder if he retired from seagoing ships to spend more time with his wife and daughter?

After Pheobe's death in 1925, Robert married widow, Emma Bond in 1928, though it appears he still grieved for Pheobe and placed along with his daughter, memorials in the Adelaide advertiser for Pheobe well into the 1930's.
