General Notes:
Kenneth Allan began his working life as an apprentice chemist at Teeds Chemist in New Plymouth. After their marriage, he and Grace began their farming career, working for a Mr Peterson at Kent Rd, New Plymouth, where their two oldest children were born. From there he and Grace moved to Kirihau road, inland from Oakura, where he managed a farm for New Plymouth Sash and Door Company. At the time they moved in, only a small portion of the farm had been cleared. The rest was cleared by Ken during the war years. He was also in the "Home guard", this was a mitltia set up to defend New Zealand from invasion while the army was overseas in Europe. The farm ran about 50 to 60 cows, though at first much lower numbers were milked by hand, followed by petrol motor and latter, electric powered milking machine The cows, and possibly some 200 sheep as well as pigs, ducks, chickens etc, supplied milk and presumably meat for the companies workers who operated a mill on the farm. Electricity was installed in the house about 1939. Prior to that lighting was by oil lamp and candle with all heating and cooking by wood fire. The Allan's and their niebours paid the cost of installation of the reticulation and were required to quarantee power usage in order to have the electrical authority complete the work. In 1948/49 my grand parents took on a sharmilking position at Normanby oposite the Normanby dairy factory on state highway 3 (now an engineering factory). From there they moved to Inaha, where they farmed for seven years untill Ken had a stroke about 1958. From that time they lived at a number of addresses in and around Hawera: Winks Road, Normanby, Glover road and TaWhiti Road where kenneth died. From there Grace moved to Gladstone street and then to 5 Vogal street
