COMMENTS
In the 1861 Census his name is erroneously given as Whitney. Edward seems to have been uncertain about when he was born. In the 1861 Census his age is given as 28 born in Radwell, Bedfordshire but a year later when he married his age is given as 27. At the time of the 1861 Census he was a boarder with Emmanuel and Mary Moxon, both age 22, and their son Albert age 1.
Edward Witney 1st and his wife, Elizabeth Smith/Witney, were both illiterate. On separate occasions they signed one of their children's wedding certificates as "X, Edward Witney his mark" or "X, Elizabeth Witney her mark". Consequently, Edward would have been unable to spell the name of his birthplace, Radwell, for the 1881 Census enumerator. He could well have pronounced it "Ruddall", as it appears in the 1881 Census return, either using Bedfordshire practice or having developed a Yorkshire accent. It is not known when Edward, or his parents, moved to Yorkshire.
The International Genealogical Index says an Edward Witney was baptised on 6 Sep 1835 in the Parish Church, Felmersham, Bedfordshire, the nearest church to Radwell ("Ruddal"), but the parents of this Edward Witney were John and Sarah Witney, which conflicts with the Marriage Certificate of this Edward Witney which says that his father was also called Edward Witney
Family Records suggest that Denis Witney is thought to have traced the Family History as far back as an ancestor who had been hung for sheep stealing before deciding that 'enough was enough' but no record of his investigations is available.
From All England Look-ups: "There is nothing spelled as you give it, but my guess is that it could be Radwell, which is a hamlet in the parish of Felmersham. That is the only thing that I find in either my gazetteer or atlas that makes sense, that starts with 'R' ".
Also from All England Look-ups: The IGI lists this entry:
Edward WITNEY
Sex: M
Event(s):
Christening: 6 Sep 1835
Felmersham, Bedford, England
Parents:
Father: John WITNEY
Mother: Sarah
There is a village adjacent to Felmersham called Radwell (which was not a parish in its own right), and I suspect that this may be the solution to your problem.
