COMMENTS
William Witney's farm is variously spelt as "Hollin Dyke" and as "Holling Dyke". Probably, the Ordnance Survey spelling of "Hollin Dyke" is preferable.
His daughter, Alice Witney, was born only five months after his marriage to his first wife, Elizabeth Sanderson/Witney. His eldest daughter from his second marriage, Ruth Witney/Gilbertson, was born only six months after his marriage to his second wife Elizabeth Hunter/Witney. Family records also suggest that William Witney also fathered a son by a woman, whose name is not yet known, whom he did not marry.
* William Witney's birth was registered in the "Anston Sub-District of Worksop Registration District in the County of York". His birth place, Kiveton Wales, is in Yorkshire although Worksop is in Nottinghamshire. Registration District boundaries have subsequently changed.
To find his grave in Thurgoland Parish Church cemetery, from the road follow the path on the right of the church into the two fields of the cemetery extension. Turn left into the left hand extension field. Turn right down the first path. The grave is in the bottom right hand corner of this left hand field. The tombstone inscription says: "In ever loving memory of WILLIAM the beloved husband of ELIZABETH WITNEY who died 17 Jan 1939 aged 69 years, also the above ELIZABETH WITNEY who died 5 Aug 1961 aged 86 years." Transcribed during a visit on 13 Mar 2002
There are Matthewman graves in Thurgoland Parish Churchyard. It is not yet known whether any belong to the family of his son-in-law, the husband of Alice Witney/Matthewman
At some time during his work as a coal miner, he was a "Development Contractor" meaning he organised and paid his own team underground for the driving of new tunnels and the opening up of new coal faces. While at Hollin Dyke he continued for a while to walk to Tankersley, where the day's work began at 6 a.m. Gradually switched into mobile green grocery, driving his pony and trap the ten miles into Sheffield Wholesale Market.
