COMMENTS

* There is an error in the GRO Births microfiche for 1871. Page 180 is missing and Page 182 has been microfilmed twice. However, from the 1891 Census, it is known that Thomas W. Gilbertson was then aged 19. He does not appear on the microfiche for any quarter in 1872, nor for the Mar, Sep or Dec quarters of 1871. Consequently his entry must be on the page missing from the microfiche, for the June Quarter of 1871. This information was sufficient to obtain a copy of Thomas Wright Gilbertson's Birth Certificate from Carlisle Register Office.

** The 1881 Census gives his age as 3, indicating he was born in 1877 or 1878, which conflicts with the evidence from his Birth Certificate. In 1881 he would have been age 9. This is probably a transcription error in the Census, an ill-formed "9" having been mis-read as a "3". It is unlikely that the Census would have described a three-year old as a "Scholar".
