COMMENTS

"A. Gentleman" is a pseudonym until his real name can be determined.

"Prior to the marriage of his mother to John Chrystal 3rd, Robert Bell Martin was the outcome of a liaison between his mother, Ann Martin, and an unknown man (referred to here as 'A Gentleman') whom she did not marry and whose identity is not yet known."

"Known throughout his life as Robert Bell Martin, he took as his own his mother's maiden surname of Martin and not the surname of his father. As a child and a young man Robert Bell Martin was always taken away during holiday periods by a 'well dressed gentleman' but who this person was remains a mystery. Following the marriage of his mother, Ann Martin, to John Chrystal 3rd, and despite retaining his own surname, Robert Bell Martin was brought up as a Chrystal and eventually inherited Thornington Farm from his uncle (i.e. his mother's brother) Jasper Martin 2nd." Source: Family Records

Although no more than conjecture, it is conceivable that the surname of Robert Bell Martin was 'Bell' as, so far, there is no evidence that 'Bell' occurs elsewhere in the family.

In the 1881 Census returns Robert Bell Martin was living with his Widowed Uncle, Jasper Martin 2nd, his unmarried mother Mary Martin (Jasper's sister) and Jasper's Widowed Mother Ann Unknown/Martin.

Robert Bell Martin and Mary Duncan/Martin (but confusingly sometimes known as Chrystal from the family in which Robert Bell Martin was brought up) lived on Thornington Farm in Mindrum, Northumberland.

He moved to "Shirrafield" in Yetholm when he sold his farm in Thornington. He probably died in Yetholm but it is not known when Source: Family Records
