"That Ensign Kidder was a man of high standing in the community in which he lived is evident from the fact that he married the daughter of so prominent and prosperous a man as Elder Francis Moore of Cambridge, as well as from his varied activities there and in Billerica, where he filled civil and military positions of responsibility, and where he was active in church affairs. He died leaving an estate of about three hundred and seventy pounds, not a large one measured by present standards of wealth, but a comfortable one for the period in which he lived. FROM THE "KIDDER FAMILY HISTORY BOOK,":
ENSIGN JAMES KIDDER, THE PROGENITOR OF PRACTICALLY ALL PERSONS IN THE UNITED STATES WHO BEAR HIS SURNAME, BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN BORN AT EAST GRINSTEAD, SUSSEX, ENGLAND, ABOUT 1626; DIED AT BILLERICA, MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA, 16 APRIL 1676, "AGED FIFTY" ACCORDING TO CONTEMPORARY RECORDS. HE MARRIED AT CAMBRIDGE, MA, PRESUMABLY LATE IN 1649 OR EARLY IN 1650, ANNA MOORE .. OF THAT PLACE, BORN IN ENGLAND ABOUT 1630; DIED AT BILLERICA IN 1691, DAUGHTER OF ELDER FRANCIS AND KATHERINE MOORE. .... SHE MARRIED SECONDLY AT CHELMSFORD, MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA, 17 MARCH 1684/5, WILLIAM UNDERWOOD OF THAT TOWN.
FROM THE "BILLERICA HISTORY BOOK,"
THERE ARE ABOUT A HALF-DOZEN PAGES IN THE GENEALOGY SECTION OF "HAZEN'S HISTORY OF BILLERICA" ABOUT JAMES KIDDER AND HIS DESCENDANTS. AND THEY ARE MENTIONED MANY TIMES IN THE GENERAL SECTION OF THE BOOK.
(IF I WERE RICH ... I WOULD PURCHASE A COPY OF THE "KIDDER FAMILY HISTORY BOOK" AND DONATED IT TO BOTH THE BILLERICA AND CHELMSFORD LIBRARIES. NEITHER LIBRARY KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT ....."ENSIGN JAMES KIDDER.")
THERE IS A KIDDER ROAD IN BILLERICA, BUT IT IS A "PAPER STREET." IT IS TWO STREETS OFF OF ANDOVER ROAD.
....JOHN KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1655 IN CAMBRIDGE, MA. HE WAS THE SON OF JAMES AND ANNA (MOORE) KIDDER. AROUND 1659, HIS PARENTS AND HIS FIVE SIBLINGS ALL MOVED TO THE NEW TOWN OF BILLERICA, MA, INCORPORATED IN 1655. THERE, JAMES AND ANNA KIDDER HAD SIX MORE CHILDREN.
BEFORE HE MARRIED, JOHN KIDDER RESIDED IN BILLERICA, MA. IN 1675 DURING KING PHILIP'S WAR, HE WAS ASSIGNED TO THE GARRISON HOUSE OF THOMAS PATTEN WITH SIX OTHER SOLDIERS, AND FIVE FAMILIES. THE OATH OF FIDELITY WAS ADMINISTERED TO HIM IN 1677.
IN 1681 HE PURCHASED 500 ACRES OF LAND LYING ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE CONCORD RIVER, WITHIN THE TOWN OF CHELMSFORD. (NEW INFORMATION SHOWS HE WAS ONE OF 50 MEN WHO BOUGHT THIS LAND - PROBABLY THE "WAMESIT PURCHASE.")
IN 1684 HE MARRIED LYDIA PARKER IN CHELMFORD, MA. SHE WAS PROBABLY THE DAUGHTER OF ABRAHAM AND ROSE PARKER, AND SHE WAS PROBABLY BORN IN WOBURN IN 1665.
HE IS SAID TO HAVE RESIDED IN CHELMSFORD FROM 1681 ON.... THE CHELMSFORD TOWN RECORDS SHOW THAT IN 1698 A PAYMENT WAS MADE TO JOHN KIDDER FOR HIS WORK AS A TITHINGMAN. IN 1691, JOHN KIDDER AND HIS FAMILY WERE LISTED AS LIVING IN A GARRISON IN CHELMSFORD.
IN 1693 JOHN KIDDER SOLD 500 ACRES OF LAND TO A JOHN VARNUM. THE LAND WAS ON THE NORTHERN SIDE OF THE MERRIMACK RIVER NEAR THE PAWTUCKET FALLS. IT IS SAID THAT HE SOLD THE LAND IN EXCHANGE FOR ... BUSHELS OF REAL INDIAN CORN. TO PUT THINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE, AT SOME POINT, JOHN KIDDER OWNED 1,000 ACRES OF LAND AT THE JUNCTION OF THE CONCORD RIVER AND THE MERRIMACK RIVER. AND THIS SAME LAND IS IN THE EXACT LOCATION OF THE CURRENT ... CITY OF LOWELL. .. THE FIRST 500 ACRES OF LAND ON THE WESTERN SHORE OF THE CONCORD RIVER WOULD BE THE CURRENT SITE OF .. SOUTH LOWELL. AND IT'S POSSIBLE SOME OF THAT LAND BECAME THE CURRENT SITE OF A SET OF LOWELL CEMETARIES. I DO NOT KNOW IF JOHN STILL HELD THIS LAND IN 1730, AND I DON'T KNOW IF HIS WIDOW AND SONS OWNED THIS LAND BEYOND 1731. BUT, I WILL TRY TO FIND OUT HOW LONG THAT LAND .. REMAINDED IN KIDDER HANDS.*
(NEW INFORMATION SHOWS THAT JOHN KIDDER WAS ONLY ONE OF ABOUT 50 MEN BUYING PROPERTY ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE CONCORD RIVER. NEW THOUGHTS ARE THAT THE LAND WAS WHERE THE "BACK CENTRAL NEIGHBORHOOD" IS NOW, OFF OF LAWRENCE STREET, AND POSSIBLY GOING UP TO CHURCH STREET. THERE WAS A REFERENCE TO JOHN KIDDER'S LAND BEING NEAR A CREEK AND A TREE. I AM WONDERING IF SOME OF THE CANALS IN DOWNTOWN LOWELL USED TO BE .. CREEKS OR STREAMS. I DON'T KNOW ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE LAND ON THE NORTHERN SIDE OF THE MERRIMACK RIVER. BUT, THAT LAND WOULD PROBABLY BE WHERE VARNUM AVENUE IS NOW.)
AFTER 1698, NO ADDITIONAL REFERENCES TO HIM ARE FOUND ... IN CHELMSFORD RECORDS. HE PROBABLY DIED IN THE YEAR 1731, MAYBE AGE 77. HIS WIFE, LYDIA KIDDER, DIED IN 1741.. AT AGE 77.
JOHN AND LYDIA KIDDER HAD 12 CHILDREN:
ANNA KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1685, BUT I DON'T SEE ANY FURTHER MENTION OF HER.
JOHN KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1687, AND HE HAD 7 CHILDREN FROM TWO WIVES, PLUS MARRIED A 3RD TIME. HIS FIRST WIFE WAS MARY ____, AND HIS SECOND WIFE WAS MARY WHEELER. HE DIED IN 1762.
THOMAS KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1690, AND HE HAD 6 CHILDREN, BUT HE DIED IN 1729 AT AROUND AGE 40. HIS WIFE, JOANNA (KEYES), REMARRIED AND HAD 2 DAUGHTERS WITH HER SECOND HUSBAND. SHE HAD REMAINED LIVING IN THOMAS KIDDER'S VERY NICE HOME IN WESTFORD, BUT HER SECOND HUSBAND, SAMUEL FITCH, HAD A VERY NICE HOME A FEW STREETS AWAY. WE DO NOT KNOW .. WHICH HOUSE THE COUPLE LIVED IN. FITCH HOUSE IS NOW A B&B; KIDDER HOUSE IS REPORTEDLY NO LONGER STANDING.
NATHANIEL KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1692, BUT I DON'T SEE ANY FURTHER MENTION OF HIM.
MARY KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1695, BUT I DON'T SEE ANY FURTHER MENTION OF HER.
JOSEPH KIDDER AND BENJAMIN KIDDER WERE TWINS AND WERE BORN IN 1697.
JOSEPH KIDDER HAD 7 CHILDREN AND LIVED IN SUTTON, MA, FOR A WHILE. HIS WIFE WAS HANNAH PROCTOR. THEY MOVED TO LONDONDERRY AND HUDSON, NH. HE DIED IN 1758 IN CHELMSFORD.BENJAMIN KIDDER HAD 5 CHILDREN, AND LIVED IN LONDONDERRY, NH. BENJAMIN MARRIED SARAH GOFFE. HE OWNED LAND IN LONDONDERRY, NH, BUT MOVED TO MANCHESTER, NH, AND HELPED TO FOUND THAT TOWN. HE FOUGHT IN THE INDIAN WARS, AND WAS KILLED IN THE SIEGE OF LOUISBERG (CAPE BRETON) IN 1746.
JAMES KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1700, AND HE HAD 10 CHILDREN WITH 2 WIVES. HE LIVED IN CHELMSFORD, MA. HIS FIRST WIFE WAS ABIGAIL WHITCOMB; HIS SECOND WIFE WAS SARAH _____, AND HIS THIRD WIFE WAS MRS. ABIGAIL BALL. I DON'T SEE INFORMATION ON WHEN HE DIED. BUT, WHILE LIVING WITH HIS THIRD WIFE, HIS HOUSE BURNED TO THE GROUND. HE LOST 3 BABIES, ONE AT A YEAR OLD AND TWO AS NEWBORN TWINS. AND THEN TWO TEEN-AGE DAUGHTERS DIED TWO YEARS AFTER THEIR HOME BURNED DOWN (1754 AND 1756). I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT HOW MUCH LONGER JAMES LIVED.
JONATHON KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1701. HE DIED IN 1728, AND I DON'T SEE ANY INFORMATION AS TO WHETHER HE MARRIED.
ELIZABETH KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1704, AND SHE MARRIED JONATHON POWERS AND HAD 6 CHILDREN. I DON'T SEE ANY MENTION OF WHEN SHE DIED.
DAVID KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1706, AND HE HAD 5 CHILDREN AND LIVED IN CHELMSFORD, MA.
DAVID MARRIED AT AGE 51 .. MRS. ESTHER (COREY) ESTABROOK. HE DIED IN 1787.SARAH KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1709, AND SHE MARRIED JOHN FLETCHER IN 1751 IN CONCORD, MA. I DON'T SEE ANY MENTION OF CHILDREN FOR HER, AND I DON'T SEE WHEN SHE DIED.
*IT SEEMS THAT FOUR OF THE SONS OWNED LAND IN CHELMSFORD AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. BESIDES THE CHELMSFORD LAND WHICH BECAME WESTFORD LAND, ONE OF THEM MUST HAVE BEEN IN THE AREA OF LITTLETON ROAD IN CHELMSFORD, ON THE WAY TO WESTFORD. THAT IS WHERE THE CURRENT .. KIDDER ROAD.. IS LOCATED.
THOMAS KIDDER
THOMAS WAS BORN IN CHELMSFORD, MA, IN 1690. HE MARRIED JOANNA KEYES IN 1716 IN CHELMSFORD, MA. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF JOSEPH AND JOHANNA KEYES. THOMAS KIDDER RESIDED IN THE SOUTH PART OF THE TOWN OF CHELMSFORD, MA, BEYOND PARKERVILLE, NEARA NONESUCH HILL, NOW A PART OF THE TOWN OF WESTFORD, MA.
HE IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN A MAN OF CONSIDERABLE PROPERTY, HIS HOUSE BEING AN UNUSUALLY FINE ONE FOR THE PERIOD, "POSSESSING MUCH ARCHITECTURAL SYMMETRY, WITH SOME ADORNMENTS."THOMAS AND JOANNA KIDDER HAD SIX CHILDREN:
THOMAS KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1717
AARON KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1719
REUBEN KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1723
JOSEPH KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1725
ISAIAH KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1727, BUT DIED IN 1728
FRANCIS KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1730THIS INFORMATION IS STATED IN THE "KIDDER FAMILY HISTORY BOOK," BUT THE DATES HAVE TO BE WRONG:
HIS NAME APPEARS ON THE MUSTER ROLL OF CAPT. JOHN SHIPLEY'S COMPANY FROM JUNE TO DECEMBER IN 1722. HE WAS ADMITTED TO THE CHURCH IN WESTFORD, MA, IN 1728. (HIS SON, FRANCIS KIDDER, WAS BORN AFTER WESTFORD ANNEXED OFF OF CHELMSFORD.) THE WHOLE FAMILY MOVED FROM CHELMSFORD TO WESTFORD... WITHOUT EVER LEAVING THEIR HOUSE.HE REPORTEDLY DIED INTESTATE, AND LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION WERE GRANTED TO HIS WIDOW IN 1729.
IN 1732, MRS. JOANNA KIDDER MARRIED SAMUEL FITCH, AND THEY HAD 2 DAUGHTERS.
THOMAS KIDDER, SON OF THOMAS KIDDER
THIS THOMAS KIDDER WAS BORN IN CHELMSFORD IN 1718. HE MARRIED ELIZABETH WHEELER IN 1741. SHE WAS PROBABLY THE DAUGHTER OF EDWARD AND ELIZABETH WHEELER AND WAS PROBABLY BORN IN LITTLETON, MA, IN 1722.
MRS. ELIZABETH KIDDER DIED IN 1764. IN 1780, THOMAS KIDDER MARRIED MARY FLETCHER OF WESTFORD, MA.
CORNET THOMAS KIDDER WAS A GENTLEMAN FARMER, RESIDING IN WESTFORD IN THE DIRECTION OF LITTLETON. HE WAS ADMITTED TO THE CHURCH IN 1740. TOWN RECORDS REFER TO HIM AS "CONSTABLE KIDDER," AND THE WORD, CORNET, IS A TITLE. IN 1793, HIS GRANDSON, THOMAS KIDDER GREEN, "ELDEST MALE HEIR OF THE DECEASED" WAS APPOINTED ADMINISTRATOR OF HIS ESTATE, THE COURT RECORDS REFERRING TO HIM AS THOMAS KIDDER, GENTLEMAN.
THOMAS AND ELIZABETH KIDDER HAD THREE CHILDREN:
ELIZABETH KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1745, AND SHE MARRIED ZACHEUS GREEN IN 1765 IN CONCORD, MA. ZACHEUS AND ELIZABETH GREEN HAD 10 CHILDREN.
ISAIAH KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1749, BUT HE DIED IN 1759.
SARAH KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1761, AND SHE MARRIED LT. SAMUEL ADAMS IN 1780. SAMUEL AND SARAH ADAMS HAD FIVE CHILDREN.THOMAS' NEXT THREE BROTHERS, AARON, REUBEN, AND JOSEPH KIDDER LEFT WESTFORD TO HELP FOUND THE TOWN OF NEW IPSWICH, NH. REUBEN KIDDER IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN THE "FATHER OF NEW IPSWICH."
THEY HAD APPROX. 30 CHILDREN BETWEEN THEM.
THEIR YOUNGEST (?) BROTHER WAS FRANCIS KIDDER, AND VERY LITTLE INFORMATION IS KNOWN ABOUT HIM. HIS BIRTH YEAR IS LISTED AS 1730, BUT THEIR FATHER DIED IN 1729. SO, EITHER FRANCIS KIDDER WAS BORN IN 1729, OR THEIR MOTHER WAS PREGNANT WITH FRANCIS WHEN THEIR FATHER DIED. EVEN THOUGH VERY LITTLE INFORMATION IS KNOWN ABOUT HIM, SEVERAL PEOPLE CLAIM TO BE DESCENDED FROM HIM.
IN 1732, THEIR MOTHER MARRIED SAMUEL FITCH, WHILE SHE WAS A WIDOWED MOTHER OF FIVE SONS, TWO OF THEM YOUNG. SAMUEL AND JOANNA HAD TWO DAUGHTERS.

He said this land was at the junction of M50 and Allegan Rd, this would be where Samuel Rogers land was as well. I will try to get Lawrence to fill us all in on what he remembers of this. I think he said about 1500 acres of land. This would be in the Northwest Territory or that part of the NW Terr. that was divided off by the year 1836. We need to check records for this land purchase. If anyone has access to this type of deeds, could you please look. This land would now be Chester, Sunfield, Vermontville and parts of other townships of Eaton County and may extend into Ionia or Barry Counties.
OCCUPATION:Farmer/Civil War. lnfo per Mary Jean Baker
Samuel and Wealthy had 6 kids: Sarah A, Charles, Pearl, Nancy Ann,
Sophia Ann, and "Young Sammy". Pearl and Nancy Elnora (Green) Rogers had 11
kids, two of whom died young (Giles and Rutherford). The names of the
children are: Giles, Clinton, Clark, Samuel, Jennie, William Pearl, Ellen,
Rutherford, Grace, Eria, and Pearl
The Lenawee County Album states that Comfort was the 6th child of Samuel
and Rhoda (Newell), but the book only named 8 of the children. I found
William in the Colosse aniversery booklet and Nathan/Nathaniel in the census, living with Olivia and listed as her borther. Rhoda died in Olivia
s home and Olivia died in the home of William Divine (his wife, Mariah Cone, was her granddaughter). Is this pretty much as you know it from family history?Barb Elsner: I am descended from Samuel and Rhoda
s son Samuel who married Wealthy Ann Clark in Lenawee County, Mich ca 1840. Wealthy and Sam moved with their family to Eaton County, Michigan ca 1953.
My line then goes this way Sam and Rhoda, Sam and Wealthy, Pearl and Nancy Elnora (Green), William and Zella (Dikeman) to my mom Helen Louise Rogers and my dad Darrell Evitt Housler. My folks were married in Eaton County, Mich though my father was born and raised in Wexford County, Mich.
MILITARY: farmer/CivilWar. Joined CO.l H 6th Mich Inf (Eaton Rifles) later H.A.) Aug 7, 1861 at Char. Died of disease at New Orleans, LA. 1854 came to Shaytown, Sunfield Twp..sft Benjamin Clark and Comfort Rogers. He went to war in his son's place because his son had his whole life to live. Original members of the Vermontville Methodist Church, lumber from his woods went into the building.(Barb Elsner)Sam and Wealthy
s family all went to Eaton County, Mich. I have been told that there was another daughter who was older. I have not been able to find anything about her. Their oldest son Charles Rogers died as a young man about 22 years of age. The daughter Sarah was married twice and she and her second husband ended out in the Dakotas.
I have been trying to get info on them, but don
t really know where to start with that either. I have the place they were living from Wealthy
s will and probate. Harlem, ND (I think
ND.). Sarah and Andrew J. Miller had some children who were listed in the
probate.Pearl Rogers is my great grandfather and he was just the right age to go off to fight the Civil War, but his dad would have none of that and so went in his place. I think Sam just couldn
t bare to lose his only remaining son and so off went Sam to die in the swamps of La. He is buried in the National Cem in La. Pearl was then left in charge of the care of his mother
and his younger sisters and the new baby (Young Sammy) who was born about the time that Sam died in the war. I always wondered if Sam even knew about the pregnancy. I have found no letters or even mention of letters exchanged between husband and wife.
Pearl and Nancy Elnora Green married and my grandfather, William Pearl Rogers was born the sixth child (in 1875). I have nice pictures of Pearl and Nancy
s family, maybe I should put them up too.I have a very large print out of the family of Sam and Wealthy that I could send you if you like. Most of the work done on it didn
t come from the census though, it came from family members themselves. I have a collaborator in Eaton Co who knows lots of the family and has gotten me group sheets of several of the lines. I am still working on many of Pearl
s
descendents but have made some nice progress this spring and summer. I have also been in touch with descendents of Sophia and Nancy Rogers, the sisters of Pearl. In fact I got a possible contact on Sophia
s family today that I have to follow up on. Person would beher grandson, her daughter Anna

Comfort was the fourth son and sixth child. The ancestors of the Rogers family were English and many of them lived to a very old age. Comfort Rogers lived with his
parents until he was 23 years old, and after his father died, he and his elder brother were two years in settling his father's estate. In the fall of 1832 Comfort went to Somerset, Niagara Co, NY and purchased a farm of the Holland Land Co and cleared up 150 acres. He remained there until the spring of 1836, when he sold out and started with an ox team for Litchfield, Medina, OH. He purchased 300 acres of land, but never accomplished much there, as he soon got homesick and disheartened. He sold out in 1838 and came to MI. He first landed in MI at Detroit but afterwards went to Toledo and drove his horse team and one cow throught the cottonwood swamp and settled on a farm in section 31, in Raisin, which he purchased during the winter previous, while on a prospecting tour.
After living there one year he sold out, and purchased 180 acres on Section 9, in Palmyra where Lanawee Junction is now loacated, where he resided until the spring of 1852. During the winter of 1852-3, he purchased of W.S. Wilcox 100 acres of new land on
Section 6, in Palmyra, where he now resides. The land was nearly all covered
with timber, which he has cleared off himself. He has added to his farm until he now owns 175 acres. He has erected good buildings, set out good orchards, and has a very valuable farm in sight of the city of Adrian. He also owns 328 acres of land on Section 1, in Riga upon which he has cleared 100 acres, which is now under good cultivation. September 9, 1833.Comfort Rogers married Ann Cone, daughter or Gordin and Lovina Cone of Mexico,
Oswego, N, by whom he has 8 children, as follows - Sutina, died in infancy, > John K. born in Litchfield, Medina, OH 3-4-1838 a resident of Burlingame, > Osage, KS. This information was given to me very graciously by Virgil W. Huntley (virgil.huntley@snet.net). I found him on the Huntley genforum and sent him a note. He also has information on the Calkins family from Oswego, NY and I think they might be the same Calkins family that married into Olivia (Rogers) Cone Winney

(Barb E.)The colosse Baptis Church anniversay book says she wed Elisha Huntley, jr. and had 2 kids, Ha nnah and Delose. virgil huntley says she had 4 children. She died at age 26 making her probably the first born of the family. (Barb Elsner)
