" The Book "
This site is dedicated to Dayton Gillock Justice and his wife Vera Irene (Davis) Justice,
For the dedication to completing this book on the Jones - Gillock and Allied Families.
In the spring of 1999, I met Charlie Gillock via the internet. He told me about a wonderful book written by Dayton Gillock Justice. A copy was at the Texas State Genealogy Library at Austin, Texas.
I was lucky and within the month, I was able to view this book for the first time. My first impression was oh my God!!... The book weights in around 10 pounds, it is printed on normal typing paper so is eight and a half inches by ten inches. It has to be close to eight inches thick. It is huge. It was bound in a red hard back cover. It was privately published by Dayton. He used a mimeograph machine to print and then had each copy bound by a professional company.
The copy of "The Book" I saw at Texas State Genealogy Library at Austin Tx, was pulled loose from the binding. When I called the Kansas State Genealogy Library at a later date, they advised me that photo copies could not be made of their copy as its binding was pulling away from the pages too.. I am afraid that all the copies are having that problem and that they may be destroyed by the libraries due to this condition. That would leave only the copy at the LDS Genealogy Library since it was put to micro fisk. That is the main reason for putting all this on line. Dayton and Vera's hard work, money spent and time will live forever at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com as this is a free site and never needs updating. As long as rootsweb is on line this will be here for the use of Gillock researchers, and to honor Dayton and Vera.
The book is wonderful, As you read it page after page you begin to understand the multiple trips, phone calls, letters and just plain hard work that Dayton and Vera did to bring all of this together.
Vera must have been a kind lady or as interested in "Genealogy" as Dayton was to put up with the many years of research and trips to the actual sites that they went to, as well as, the time consumed typing it.
It reads as if Dayton was sitting right there talking to you. Of course as in anything there are errors, spelling, typos and even some in the genealogy itself. As with all research, you need to verify what you find.
I wish I had known Dayton and Vera, I believe it would have been my pleasure.
In 1999, I called Billy Stephens, a cousin of Dayton and Vera, he was listed in the book by Dayton as a contact/control person for the book in case Dayton wasn't around anymore; to see if I could get a copy of the book. I found him listed in the phone book. Billy told me Dayton and Vera had passed away. I asked if he knew where or if there were any copies left. He said he didn't think there were any left and that if there were he wouldn't know where they were as Dayton had no heirs. I asked if he, as the named contact/control person thought that Dayton would mind if I put the book on line. He said he knew Dayton would not mind, and "if you can find one go a head". So thanks to Rita E Woodward, a very kind lady; who is copying the book and mailing me copies at her own expense; we will now get this book on line March 17, 2004 Added note... Rita has also been transcribing pages too... September 26, 2004, Rita sent me the entire book in PDF file format last month. Now, it shouldn't take to much longer. 11 Oct. 2004
