Deed Book 21 page 431, Gillock to Shepard This indenture made this 22 day of April 1799 between Jane Gillock of Orange Co. of the one part & George Shepard of the same Co., of the other part: Whereas one Lawrence Gillock Sr. seized and possessed of a tract or parcel of land lying in this county containing 96 acres of land by virtue of a case made to him by one Alexander Waugh for and during the lives Lawrence Gillock Jr., Thomas Gillock Samuel Lindsay Gillock, which case has been duly recorded in this office of Orange Co. Court wherein the particulars bounds & discription are expressed and the said Lawrence Gillock Sr. being so seized possessed did depart this life in the year 1786 having made and duly published his last will and testament also recorded in the office of Orange Court & therein devised amongest other things the aforesaid land to the said Jane Gillock his wife for her life as by said will. Reference being thereto had will appear with the power to dispose of the same to such of her children as most assisted her in paying off the said testaters debts, but in as much as at the death of the said testators such interest as he had in the aforesaid land was not by law deviseable but the same belonged to such occupied as obtained & kept the possession of the same and whereas the said Jane Gillock was in possession of the same at the death of the said Lawrence Gillock \sr. and hath constantly held the possession thereof until she disposed of part of it to Lawrence Gillock Jr. who had assisted her most in paying off the testaters debts binding on the lands of William Carty & the said George Shepard and by a fence running thru the said land from a pile of stone corner to the said Shepard straight to the said Carty's line and has agreed to sell the balance of the said leased land to the said George Shepard except the dewelling house, Kitchen, yard & garden, in which the said Jane Gillock reserves an interest during her life time together with the liberty of cutting firewood from any part of the premises during her life--- now this indenture--- witnesseth that the said Jane Gillock for and in consideration of the sum of 43 pounds to her in hand paid by the said George Shepard the receipt whereof she doth thereby acknowledge hath granted, bargained, sold & transferred & by these presents doth bargin, sell & transfer unto the said George Shepard his heirs & assigns all her, the said Jane Gillock's rights, title & interest in and to the balance of the said leased premises not by her before disposed of reserving to herself, nevertheless the use & occupation during her life of the dwelling, kitchen, yard &garden & said also the right of cutting firewood on the premises & to have & to hold the premises hereby conveyed with the appurtenances to him the said George Shepard, his heirs & assigns except the life estate of the said Jane Gillock for herself, her heirs, executors and addministrators doth coveenant & grant to and with the said George Shepard, his heirs, executors, addministrators & assigns that she will warrant & forever defend the premises hereby conveyed to him the said George Shepard his heirs executors & addministrators & assigns against the parties hereto have set their hands and affixed their seals the day & year first above written. Received of Mr. George Shepard the 43 pounds mentioned in this indenture to have been paid by him. At Court held for Orange Co., on Monday April 22, 1799 this indenture with a receipt indorsed thereon from Jane Gillock to George Shepard was acknowledged by the said Gillock & Shepard & ordered to be recorded.
