Lawrence Gillock Jr's history continues.......................
farm, on the road leading from Glasgow to Roseville to the farm formerly owned by Andrew Nuckols, just below the Ritter Mill. The land extended far towards Roseville, and included the Old John Adams place on the right beyond the Ray farm. Mr Gillock was said to be one of seven brothers all of whom were in the Revolutionary War. (Correction his brother James was born 1782 & was not old enough. DGJ) He raised a large family of 3 daus & 1 son.
On the south side of Skaggs Creek further down James Gillock (of the Barren Co., KY will 1842 . DGJ) settled on a tract of land thought to be about 1,000 acres. (true, see Deeds.. DGJ) and brother to Lawrence Jr. (see more about James elsewhere . DGJ).
We went back to Barren Co., KY in June 1978 to do more research & our cousin Martha Lennie (Weaver) Bagby, 203 Milton Ave., Glasgow, KY 42141, pho (502) 651-2308 ...before going I had corresponded with her...she had lived there all her life and knew everyone, an old retired school teacher, had sprained her ankle and did not think she would be able to go with us as promised...but by the time we were to leave and go by ourselves, she was so inspired & curiosity got the best of her she decided to go.... had it not been for her, we would never have accomplished what we did.. sprained ankle or not, she stayed right in there with us, 68 years old, and limped everywhere...we stayed the next 5 nights with her... she guided us to all the cemeteries in that vicinity & I got information I thought I would never find, thanks to her...... she guided us to land once owned by Lawrence Gillock Jr. one parcel now (1978) owned by Elizabeth (Thomason) Garrett located about 1/4 mile east of Mt Pleasant Baptist Church...She lives in an old 2 story stone house, real old, back of that about a 1/4 mile in a tobacco field is the old Gillock Cemetery, now known as the Thomason Cemetery, divided into sections
Also on land once owned by Lawrence Gillock Jr. now owned by Earl Mansfield, we had to get Malcom Lowe Rt. 6 Box 47 Glasgow, Ky 42141, a cousin, who lives near by on land also once owned by Lawrence to go with us & guide us to the parcel where Lawrence Jr.'s house barns and lot once stood, but now has been bull dozed down and pushed into a pile that is rotting down; from a small knoll Malcom pointed out two small lakes a good 200 yards away in size about 1 1/2 acres each of water, it was "HOT" summertime he & I walked, using sticks to sorta brush the weeds out of the way and too, to watch for rattle snakes, down the very gentle incline to near the lakes, he said they were fed by a spring ..still flowing after these more than 174 years...it supplied Lawrence Jr & his family, stock etc with water all his life, The lakes were full to the rim I took a picture of these, if there is enough money I may print this for the book...There were some lush trees, some ever greens near the lake edges in the back ground were many trees dividing property lines .. as Malcom talked, telling of conditions of the land ect... I had a happy delightful feeling of being near a place of my ancestors.... I found a large 50 penny common nail round not square and pulled it out of a board, picked up a piece of rail road tie 6 x8 x 36 inches in size, my hand full with camera etc. So Malcom carried the tie, also got a brick from the old fire place, the brick and possibly the tie was from the original, I don't know about the nail, but any way they are here in my home, each with a tag as to where it came from & who once owned them. Oh I have many items like that, especially family pictures, have many, many, they are treasures to me, you don't have to be "CRAZY" to be that way, but it "DO" help, AMEN: Made a picture frame out of a tie
