John was born in 1850 in Bristol. His occupation on the 1871 census was a porter and he lived at the family home at 30 Alfred Street, St Phillips. He married Elizabeth Jefferys in Bristol 1872 and they lived at 6 Kenilworth Terrace on the 1881 census. He worked as a Foreman at a local chemical works.

Their children were :

2. Robert Henry Gillard b. 1877 m. Sarah Bidwell in Bristol 1899. Their children were :
   1. Mabel E Gillard b. 1899
   2. Robert J A Gillard b. 1913
3. Ernest Edward Gillard b. 1879. Earnest worked as a blindmaker on the 1901 census.
4. Mabel Emily Gillard b. 1881
5. William John Gillard b 1884. William worked as a grocer on the 1901 census.

Elizabeth died in 1888 and John married Annie Trantum in Bristol 1889. Annie was born in Hambleton, Surrey. Their address on the 1901 census was 8 Ashley Road, St Barnabas Bristol. Their children were :

2. Francis Edwin Gillard b. 1895
