Bessie became an actress in 1875 and in 1876 she was accepted into the company at the Theatre Royal Liverpool. There she met John Charles Guilfoyle an Irish actor. She married him in 1879 and they spent the rest of their working life travelling from town to town and country to country. She wrote on the back of one photograph that she had been playing Topsy in Uncle Tom's Cabin for 5 years without a break They had four children: Margaret Annie, Charles, Daniel and Elizabeth. Margaret Annie was Ann's grandmother. Charles was a steward on a ship when he emigrated to New York. He married a French girl called Fani. The Ellis Island records show that Charlie said he was born in Vancouver, Canada but we have not yet found any record of that. Daniel we know nothing about Elizabeth was born in 1897 married an American Sailor after WW1 and went to America. She kept in touch with Muriel, her niece and in 1981 Ann's father, Bernard GIBBON, went to California to see her. She was living with her daughter Alice in San Diego. A few years later Elizabeth died and the contact with Alice was lost. |
