Farmer, councilman
PLESSIS - Paul A. Hunter, 79, of 25886 Route 26, died Friday at his home.

Mr. Hunter and his wife had owned and operated dairy farms in the Plessis area and eventually bought the former Earl and Lora Hunter farm, which they operated until 1973, when Mr. Hunter retired from farming.

Born September 3, 1923, in Theresa, son of Earl A. and Lora Wilson Hunter, he graduated from Alexandria Bay High School in 1941.

He married Barbara C. Estes on August 16, 1945, at the Alexandria Bay United Methodist Church with Rev. Lester W. Wakeman officiating. Mrs. Hunter died March 2, 1999.

He was a memeber of Lakeside Odd Fellows Lodge 328 in Redwood, Alexanadria Bay United Methodist Church and Plessis Fire Department. He was a 20-year councilman for the town of Alexandria, was town assessor for eight years and had served on the board of directors for Redwood National Bank for 24 years.

Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Carolyn H. and Richard Walsh, Bridgewater Corners, VT; two sons and their wives, Gregory P. and Joan, Elbridge, and Philip F. and Debra, Lowville; a brother, Douglas K. Hunter, LaFargeville and five grandchildren.

Three brothers, Jack W., Richard E. and Alvaro J. Hunter, and a sister, Elizabeth V. Hunter Delling, died before him.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Helen Beck officiating. The body will be cremated at Frederick Brothers Crematory. Private burial will be in Brookside Cemetery (Plessis).

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mary Leonhardt Roeder, 78, Redwood

Redwood - Mrs. Mary Leonhardt Roeder, 78, widow of Karl A. Roeder died Monday, Aug. 7 at the A. Barton Hepburn hospital, Ogdensburg where she was a patient for a few hours. She had been a patient at the Cedars Nursing Home near Ogdensburg for three weeks. Mrs. Roeder had broken her hip on April 25 and had been in failing health since that time.

The funeral will be this afternoon at 2 p.m. at St. Paul s Lutheran church here with the Rev. John Campbell, pastor of Concordia Lutheran church, Watertown, officiating. Burial will be in Redwood cemetery.

Mrs. Roeder is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Olin (Margaret) Spies, and a granddaughter, Miss Ann Spies of Redwood; two sisters, Mrs. John (Elsie) Meisenheimer of Alexandria Bay and Miss Anna M. Leonhardt of here and two brothers, Harold Leonhardt of Alexandria Bay and Karl Leonhardt of Watertown.

She was born Dec. 26, 1889 in the town of Alexandria the daughter of the late Henry and Elisabeth Zimmer Leonhardt. She attended local school(s) and on Jan. 8, 1910 she was married to Karl A. Roeder in the parsonage of Concordia Lutheran church, Watertown, by the late Rev. Yost Brandt. Mrs. Roeder and her husband first lived on a farm in the vicinity of Lowville and later purchased the Peck farm in Baucus Settlement where they lived until they retired in 1945 when they moved to this village. Mrs. and Mrs. Roeder had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 8, 1960. Mr. Roeder died on May 11 of this year.

Mrs. Roeder was a member of St. Paul s Lutheran church of this village, the Dorcas Society of which she was secretary for many years, Order of the Eastern Star chapter 154 of Alexandria Bay, the Alexandria Center home bureau unit and the Redwood Study Club.
