Plessis Holds Dedication
Plessis United Methodist Church
A dedication service was held October 25, 1981 at the PlessisUnited Methodist Church. The service was conducted by the Rev.Edgar Hunter, pastor, with the sermon being delivered by the Rev.Leonard Owen, district superintendent.
Three memorials were dedicated at the service: a memorial bookstand in memory of Ross Hunter; electric stove and plaque in memoryof Gladys Hunter; and pew cushions in memory of faithful workers and friends of the church.
The first appointment recorded in the Alexandria Circuit, now Plessis, was that of Josiah Zimmerman in 1849. Prior to that appointment Methodists met in members homes in Plessis as early as 1825. The present church building was dedicated in 1860, during the pastorate of the Rev. Allen C. Castle. In 1890 repairs were made to the church and in 1924 steel ceilings and walls and roofwere added improvements. Various repairs and additions have beenmade through the years - a kitchen and dining area were added in the 1950 s; 1962 an electric organ fund was started and the dedication service for the organ was held in October of that year. The ceilings were lowered and fluorescent lights added in 1965;1975 carpet was installed on the chancel floor.
The congregation thanks the Rev. Edgar Hunter for his work and service in their church.
