Clarice Newbold Becomes Bride of Fred Estes

Popular Young Couple Wed at Methodist Episcopal Parsonage - To Reside in Alexandria Bay

At the Methodist Episcopal parsonage in this place last Sunday afternoon, Miss Clarice Newbold, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Newbold, became the bride of Fred Estes, son of Capt. Lewis Estes of this place.

The ceremony was performed by the pastor, Rev. O. E. Raymond, and the young couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Homer Westcott.

Both young people are well and favorably known in the Bay. Mr. Estes being a lifelong resident, and Miss Newbold having lived here for the past ten years, coming here from England, where whe was born. Mr. and Mrs. Estes are both graduates of the local high school, and at present Mrs. Estes is employed as secretary to the principal, and Mr. Estes has been employed at the Vrooman store for the past two years.

After the ceremony a wedding dinner was served at the home ofthe bride's parents and the happy young couple left for Watertown, amid showers of confetti, rice and good wishes. From Watertown they will enjoy a honeymoon through the Adirondacks and upon their return will make their home at 26 Walton Street where they have a home ready for occupancy.

Both young people are very popular among the younger people ofthe town. Mr. Estes having been one of the basketball stars on the local team for the past few years, andduring the past season having acted as manager for the aggregation. They have the best wishes of a host of friends for a long and happy wedded life.

Obituary:

Alexandria Bay - Clarice Middleditch, 93, Alexandria Bay, died May 8, 1997 at Genesis Health Care, Watertown, where she had resided since September 1988.

Before her marriage, she was a secretary at Alexandria Bay High School for the principal, George Radley.

Born July 19, 1903, in Mount Sorrel, England, daughter of Alfred and Eliza Antill Newbold, she moved with her mother to the United States at age 9. They joined her father, who had previously come to the United States and lived in Concord, N.H. She attended schools for two years in Concord before entering the sixth grade at Alexandria Bay. She was a 1922 graduate of Alexandria Bay High School.

She married Fred M. Estes on May 4, 1924, in Alexandra Bay Methodist Church with the Rev. Oliver Raymond officiating. Mr. Estes died December 17, 1950, at age 47. She married Frances S. Middleditch of Alexandria Bay on October 5, 1963, at the Alexandria Bay Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Pennock officiating. Mr. Middleditch died April 1, 1976.


Mrs. Middleditch moved to Briarwood Apartments in 1983. She was admitted to Genesis Health Care on September 25, 1988 following an automobile accident.

Mrs. Middleditch returned to England for the first time at age 70 to visit relatives. She was a lifelong member of the Alexandria Bay Methodist Church, where she was the organist for several years and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Fortnightly club and an avid gardener.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Barbara) Hunter, Plessis; a stepdaughter, Mrs. William (Helen) Estes, Alexandria Bay; three grandchildren, Carolyn H. Richter, Hardwick, Vermont, Gregory P. Hunter, Elbridge, and Philip F. Hunter, Lowville; five great-grandchildren, Emily and Anna Richter, Nathan, Daniel and Sarah Hunter; three step grandchildren, Yvonne Middleditch Lewis, James Estes and Thomas Estes and three step great grandchildren, David, Gena and Kerensa Estes.

A graveside service was held Sunday at Church Street Cemetery with the Rev. Alvin Mayo, pastor of the Alexandria Bay United Methodist Church, officiating.

A memorial service will be held at the Alexandria Bay United Methodist Church at a later date.
