Nina Hunter remembers:

Ann Dayton Shannon had two children and then her husband died. She owned her farm and it was paid for. Then she married Grandpa Hunter (Thomas).

Ann was a pusher; Thomas wasn t. According to Ida Hunter his farm was not out of debt yet when they married. They had two more children, Minnie and Alvaro J. When each of her children married, Ann had enough money to buy a farm for each one of them. She gave Gilbert her Shannon Farm on Hunter Road. When Derinda married Al Giltz (Hill?), Anne gave her money to buy a farm in Hammond. Derinda left her husband for being unfaithful. Alvaro and Ida moved into the Hunter Farm on the hill. When Minnie married James Bacon (the Bacons were very poor) Ann had enough money to buy them the farm where Walter lived.

Thomas was not living alone up on the Hunter Farm when he married Ann. Thomas added on to the house. The old part of the house had a cheese cellar. The barns were built by Thomas also. He only milked 7 or 8 cows and when Ann moved up on the hill, she brought some of her cattle with her. She told Thomas to Get rid of that one. Thomas said, Oh, but we ve raised her since she was a little calf. She s a nice little cow. Ann told him, She isn t making you any money. Ann straigtened the dairy out.

Ida said Ann was a whirlwind for work and was a very good caretaker. In those days they pickled their meat in barrels and when the barrels were empty, Ann would take them out in the yard and scour them with sand and water and dry them properly.
