A Conversation Overheard by Greg Hunter between Paul Hunter and Lora Hunter Bragg during the summer of 1978
Alvaro Hunter lived on what was Ross Hunter s farm on Hunter Road, Plessis, NY. He moved to the Plessis farm in 1903 when Ronald was being weaned. Gram ______ took Ronald to a bedroom upstairs so he wouldn t disturb everyone. This was also when Ross Hunter married Harriet Wilson, Lora s half sister.
Thomas, Alvaro s father, owned Ross farm before Alvaro. When his wife died he went to live with Alvaro. Thomas is buried in the Plessis Cemetery.
Alvaro died in the bitter cold of January 1934 of an enlarged spleen (cancer?). Paul spent nights with his grandmother, Ida Blevins Hunter and did chores - there were cattle in the barn, heifers, calves sucking, and Paul had to pump water by hand for the young cattle.
Paul remembers riding with his grandfather, Alvaro, in a horse and buggy - an old gray horse.
Paul Hunter remembers (March 2000):
Allie bought his father s farm, the Corliss farm in Plessis, Charles/Roy/Leon s farm and the home in Plessis where Alvaro and Ida retired to.
Alvaro borrowed $5000 from Claude Makepeace to buy Charles farm.
Alvaro owed $5000 when he died. Earl Hunter settled the estate.
Earl gave Ida $15 a month to live on after Alvaro died. She was furnished wood to burn by Ross, fresh milk from Earl s farm and slaughtered meat was shared with her - canned, salted, always a pot on the stove with meat in it.
Charles worked his farm for his father, Alvaro.
