Joseph Allen

From The Carroll County Heritage
Vol. II, Geneology Club, 1997
163 WILLIAM ALLEN;
The Allens of Fancy Gap decended from William Allen Jr.( wife, Ann Stuart) who settled there on Pauls Creek in 1791. His father was William Allen, Sr. according to J. Sidna Allen and this is believed to be the William Allen Sr whose wife was Agnes and who had land on Chestnut Creek near Cliffview and Blair's Forge, in the Galax area and also on Meadow Creek and Crooked Creek. In 1805, he and Agnes deeded land to William Ailen, Jr. as witnessed by Joshua Allen. Henry H. Dean and Phillip Beamer.
There is a Joshua Allen line in Nelson County, Va. whose descendants have apparently been named after the Fancy Gap Allens and who claim kinship.
William Allen Sr. and his wife Agnes of Grayson County, VA deeded 200 acres of land in Rockingham County, NC. (D: 255) to Joseph Allen, Jr. on January 9,1796. This was located on Grammers Branch of Pruetts Fork of Hegans Creek. Shadrack Allen who came to Carroll County, Va. circa 1820 is believed to have sold land in the same area ot North Carolina, circa 1818.
In Joseph Allen Sr.'s will, dated 1770, (A-122) he lists a wife Sarah, a daughter, Elizabeth and sons, John. William, Daniel, George and Joshua. He lists "other children", Solomon, Samuel, Elisha and Joseph. Descendants of Joseph Allen still live in the Reidsville area of North Carolina.
It is believed that Joseph Allen. Sr.'s son was William, whose wife was Agnes, and that William left Grayson County, VA and moved to Lawrence County, TN and settled in the Lawrenceburg area where other members of the Joseph Allen family were living at that time and he died there.
It appears that some historians have mistakenly thought that William Allen Jr. whose wife was Ann Stuart of Fancy Gap, might have been the son of William Allen, whose wife was Mary Lewis of Henry County, Va., who was born in 1823 and died in Mecklenburg County, Va. in 1789. (will was dated February 4.)
A descendant of the Henry County Allen family has referred us to Volume Two of a book -Your Family and Mine, Descendants of William Allen, by John R. Martin of Saint Joseph, Mis- souri, published in 1957. This book indicates that particular William Allen, Jr. marned Sally Anderson and had (1) Jones Allen, bom July 2,1785, died 1833, married Dorothy Gee. December 21, 1808; (2) Martha married William Coleman on February 20,1797; (3) Susan S. married Mayor H. Harper; (4) Mary I. married a Walker; (5) Permelia married a Coleman. There are about 4 pages on the descendants of William Allen, Jr. There is nothing in the book which indicates a connection to the Fancy Gap Allens.
The Grayson County will of William Allen, Jr. of Fancy Gap who married Ann Stuart was dated July 12, 1823. Their Children were: (1) John, (b. 1784 in NC-d.1877), married Nancy Daniel on December 24, 1805; (2) Carr (b. 1786-d. after 1864 in Raleigh County, WV or OH), married Temperance Daniel on March 10, 1815 in Patrick County, VA (parents of Jeremiah Allen of Fancy Gap, Va. born 1825); (3) Robert (b. According to Ethel Wolfe of Iowa, James. Henry and Robert went to Jackson County, Ohio together from Logan, later Fayette County. WV in 1830. They settled on adjoining farms and lived in good circumstances. Later came Anna. Isaac and their mother. Much of the information on these Allens was collected by Denzil Daniel of Fredricksburg. VA.
