BOWLERS, George (Betsy). W.5046.
    26 Oct. 1843. Franklin 0o., Va. Mrs. Betsy (X) Bowles of said county, 
aged 88, declares she is widow of George Bowles of said county who was a 
private of militia for two or more tours. One tour was at Gates' defeat 
in the summer of 1780 and another was at Yorktown at the capture of Lord 
Cornwallis, being marched from there after the surrender as part of the 
guard that conducted the British prisoners to Winchester, Va.
    The tour at Gates' defeat was performed under Capt. Jesse Hurd of the 
Bedford militia and was a three month tour. That at the capture of 
Cornwallis was under Capt. John Trigg of the Bedford militia and was of 
a longer duration. He left home 7 Aug. 1781 and returned 25 Nov. 1781. He 
received a wound at Yorktown in his leg, which was the cause of his death.
    She was married in Bedford County by Rev. Mr. Brandrum of the Church of 
England in Nov. 1774 or 1775. He died 7 June 1824. Her maiden name was 
Arthur.
    26 Oct. 1843. Franklin Co, Va. Cyrus Rice, Justice of the peace, 
declares he is acquainted with Reuben Bowles, son of George and Betsey 
Bowles, and supposes he is between 60 and 7O years old. They had a daughter 
older than Reuben.
    15 June 1843. Bedford Co., Va. William Arthur of Henry Co., Va., aged 
80, declares he knew George Bowles of Franklin County who married Betsey 
Arthur during the early part of the Revolution, about 68 years ago. 
(he was about twelve at the time ) in Bedford Co., Va. He served at Gates' 
defeat at Camden under Capt. Jesse Hurd of Bedford militia in the summer 
of 1780. The company left Booth's, a place of rendezvous, about the 
last of May or first of June and returned the last of August or first of 
September. IIe was St Yorktown, under Capt. John Trigg of the Bedford 
militia, between three and four months, leaving home the last of August, 
or fulling fodder time. and returning about the last of November or
first of December. Bowles received a slight wound at Yorktown which 
after he returned home continued to get worse (being inflamed from 
travelling). He received the wound by having a log knocked off his 
shoulder by a cannon ball while assisting in raising a fort at Yorktown.
    28 June 1843. Bedford Co., Va. James (X) Maxey of Franklin County, 
aged 76, declares George Bowles married Betsy Arthur about 1775 in Bedford 
County, now Franklin. He makes a similar statement about Bowles' service.
Betsy Bowles of Franklin Co., Va., widow of George Bowles who died 
7 June 1824, private in Virginia for six months, was placed on the
Richmond, VA pension roll at $20 per annum under the Act of 1836.
