The following wills were submitted by Bevery J Boles, who
has spent a lot of time transcribing them, so they can be of help to other researchers.
These are listed alphabetically.
I Anderson BOWLES of Barren County, and State of Kentucky in perfect mind
and memory do make this my last will and testament revoking all former will
or wills.
Items I give and bequeath to my sister Ginsy Bowles and her heirs forever
one sorrell horse colt and two stears and one year old hefer.
Item 2nd. I give and bequeath to my brother Sackkyriah Bowles one grey mare
and one cow and calf.
Signed and sealed. publishes? and declares this to be my last Will and
Testament this 25th day of April 1811.

DAVID BOWLES
I, David BOWLES, of the County of Bourbon and the State of Kentucky and
being in sound mind and memory considering the uncertainty of life and the
certainty of death do make my Will and first I surrender my soul to God who
gave it and into the arms of Jesus Christ, trusting through his merits the
pardon of my sins by who's righteousness I hope for salvation and hope to
stand justified before God at the last day. My body I leave to be buried
in the earth in a decent manner by which my surviving friends at the
discretion of my executor whom I shall hereafter appoint in hopes of a
joyful resurrection through my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. As for my
temporal estate or worldly goods wherewith it has half, please God to bless
me. I give, devise and bequeath in manner and form the following.
Imprimis, first I desire that all my just debts to be paid. Item. I lend
to my beloved wife, Winnie BOWLES during her natural life the house and
plantation whereon I now live with two hundred
and twenty seven and three quarter acres of land being part of a tract of
land I purchased of Chapman AUSTIN as his deed to me will more fully show.
Beginning on a buckeye ash, and elm, my beginning corner standing in
AUSTIN's pattant line on his west boundary thence south with AUSTIN's line
two hundred and forty-eight and a half poles to a mulberry,elm,and
sugartree, thence east one hundred and forty-seven poles to a corner thence
north along a line of marked trees to a corner in Abraham Coffman's line
two hundred and forty-eight and a half poles to ,,,,,,,,,, thence west one
hundred and forty-seven poles to the beginning except so much as I may
hereafter allot to her mother Molly RICE. Item: I lend, widow Molly RICE
one negro boy named James assignees forever. Item: I give and bequeath to
my granddaughter, Elizabeth THOMAS a negro girl named Milley (daughter of
James) to her, her heirs and assignees forever. And that she take
possession of her immediately. Item: I give and
bequeath to my great grandson, David THOMAS a negro girl named Sarah
(Daughter of Hagen's) to him his heirs and assignees forever and that his
father take possession of her for him immediately after my decease. Item:
it is my will that if my wife should fly to her thirds and choose the place
where my son Jesse BOWLES now lives which I have made over to him by deed
of gift in such case that my son Jesse BOWLES should possess the place I
lent to her where I now live during her life and no longer. It is my will
and desire that the rest of my estate that I have not given be kept
together under the care and direction of my executor and that he sell that
part of my horses, sheep and that is not immediately necessary for
cultivation and the necessities of my family for the support of my lawsuits
family and education of my children till October eighteen hundred and nine
at which time I have to my wife Winney BOWLES one negro woman named Lucy
during her natural life or widowhood, also s
o much cleared land in the plantation I now line on as will be sufficient
for James to work, and timber sufficient for repairing the fence, firewood,
building and other uses. But not to waste also I give to her her heirs and
assigns forever one cow and calf, two ewes and lambs, one sow and pigs and
provision for herself, James and the stock given, till she can raise a
crop. Item: I give bequeath and devise to my son, Nelson BOWLES one
hundred and sixty-two acres of land joining the east boundary of my land
and between the north and south boundary to adjoin William Halls and Jesse
BOWLES's and parallel lines together with one negro boy named Joe, one
featherbed, one cow and calf, to ewes and lambs and my oldest sorrel filly,
which I have already given him, his heirs and assignees forever. Item: I
give, bequeath and devise to my son, Thomas BOWLES and daughter, Elizabeth
BOWLES at the decease of my wife, Winnie BOWLES, the two hundred and
twenty-seven acres I lent her during her
life, likewise the ninety-seven acres line between said land and my son
Nelson BOWLES's land to be equally divided between them, likewise to my
son, Thomas BOWLES, I have a negro girl named Mima and one featherbed, also
to my daughter Elizabeth BOWLES I have one negro girl named Judd and one
featherbed to them their heirs and assignees, one negro girl named Peggy
and one negro boy named Peter. One featherbed and its furniture the fourth
part of my household and kitchen furniture, stock of horses, horned cattle,
hogs and sheep to her heirs and assignees forever. Item: It is my will
and desire that the rest of my estate not given to my wife Winnie BOWLES or
lent to her during life be equally divided October 1809 between my three
children, Nelson BOWLES, Thomas BOWLES and Elizabeth BOWLES to them their
heirs and assignees forever. And likewise, James and negro man I lent to
widow Molly RICE during her life or widowhood, at her decease or marriage
and to return to the estate. .If s
he dies or marries before October eighteen hundred and nine, if after that
time to be sold and equally divided at her death or marriage between my
three children, Nelson, Thomas & Elizabeth BOWLES to them their heirs &
assignees forever. And now I constitute and appoint my dear friend Richard
THOMAS guardian to my children and executor of this my last will and
testament and desire it may be received by all as such. In witness
whereof I have here unto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th day of
February 1806.

Will abstract of Elizabeth BOWLES, daughter of Gideon BOWLES & Charity Ann
HUGHES.

In the name of God Amen, I Elizabeth BOWLES of Goochland VA., do make and
ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following, to
witt:
Wills and bequeaths to sister Nancy, two female slaves Jenney and Barbara
with their future increase and one feather bed.
I give and bequeath to Fredrick W.SMITH four negros to witt: Barnet, John,
Ben and Jim.
Item; I wish and desire that my negro woman, Mary, will be sold to some
person whom she may choose---to raise $300.00.
Item: I give and bequeath to my three neices, Charity, Nancy and Virginia,
daughters of sister Mary MALLORY, 100 dollars each of amount from sale of
said slave.
Item; I bequeath all my interest which I may have in four negro slaves and
my interest in the tract of land to Anderson, Augustus and Davy BOWLES,
sons of my brother Anderson BOWLES, to be equally divided among them.
All the rest and residue of my stock of every kind I bequeath to Sister
Nancy BOWLES and Fredrick W.SMITH to be equally divided among the.
Lastly I appoint my friends Fredrick SMITH and Wm.HUGHES my
executors---this last day of February, 1840.

Gideon Bowles
This abstracted will of Gideon Bowles was presented by Payton Randolph
Chapter DAR, Los Angeles, CA. A certified copy is owned by Mrs Glen LeRoy
Shivel, LA, CA.
In the name of God Amen, I Gideon BOWLES of the county of Goochland, VA. do
make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form
following, to-wit:
First: I lend unto my daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Judith, and Nancy the
house and plantation whereon I now live during their and each of their
single lives and at their marriage or death, I devise the same to all my
children in equal portions share and share alike.
He also lends to "my said daughters" one negro woman by name of Sibba and
her future increase and one of my best work horses.
Items: Whereas I have heretofore lent unto my daughter, Mary MALLORY, one
negro woman called Jenny. I devise the said negro be brought into hatch
pott and her value equally divided amongst all my children.
He also wills one cow and calf and one bed and furniture(each separately)
to his four single daughters, previously named, and the same to two sons,
Clairborne and William.
Item: All the rest and residue of my estate of whatsoever kind it may
consist, I desire should be equally divided between my twelve children
named to-wit: Patsy GAINES, Jenny THOMAS, Sarah, Hughes, Nathan, Anderson,
Mary MALLORY, Betsy(Elizabeth), Clairborne, Judith, William, and Nancy---to
them and their heirs forever.
Appoints "My friend Stephen Grange, my sons Anderson and Nathan executors.

Jesse Bowles
In the name of God Amen I Jesse BOWLES of Bourbon County being for many
years in an infirm state of health but of sound mind and good memory and
knowing I am to die, that I may prevent all future disputes in my family
and among my friends, that I may dispose of all my worldly substances with
which it has pleased God to bless me, do make and ordain this my last will
and testament, hereby revoking all former will or wills or testaments whatsoever.
Item, It is my will that my just debts be paid.
Item, I lend unto my loving wife, Hannah BOWLES so long as she remains my
widow and no longer, my house and that part of my plantation and tract of
land which shall not be hereafter disposed of, also all my household and
kitchen furniture, all implements of husbandry on my said plantation of
every description, all the stock of every kind, Viz, Horses, Cattle, sheep,
Hoggs, and poultry. Together with the following negroes. Viz, Kize, Sarah,
Sam, Lett, (said Lett now lent to my son Hugh BOWLES, Easter, Daniel,
Charles, Milly, Nicea?, Synthia, Julian, Willis, & Charity for her use and
support, and after her death or intermarriage with any other person to be
disposed of as follows. Viz, Item, I give unto my daughter Elizabeth THOMAS
after the decease of my said wife Hanna BOWLES, my clock and case together
with whatsoever I have already given her to her heirs, and assignees
forever. Item, After the decease or intermarriage of my said wife Hannah
BOWLES, I give unto my two sons, Jesse
BOWLES and Hughs BOWLES the whole reversion of my tract of land on which
I now live which I have lent unto my wife Hannah with the reserve hereafter
to be made, said tract of land containing two hundred and fifty acres to be
divided by running a line from north to south so as to give each of my
said sons Jesse and Hughes one hundred and twenty five acres and leaving
the houses and garden in the east end of the land, which said east end of
the land I give unto my son Jesse, and the west end unto my son Hughes,
making no account for the houses, garden or orchard. Given to them, and
their heirs and assignees forever. Item. I have already given or lent my
son David BOWLES one negro girl named Delia who has now got a living child,
which two negroes I consider his proportion of all my negro property but
leave it optional in my said son David to put said Delia and her present
and future increase into the general stock of negroes at the death of my
said wife H.BOWLES and take one equa
l division as hereafter named, or to keep said Delia and her increase as
his full proportion of all my negroes. In case my said son David chooses
to bring said Delia and her present and future increase and putting them
with the balance of my negroes, Viz, Kize, Sarah, Sam, Lett, Easter,
Daniel, Charles, Milly, Nicea, Synthia, Julian, Willis, and Charity, and
the above mentioned Delia and her child Jane, with all their future increase.
Then my will is that after the death or intermarriage of my said wife
Hannah with any other person, all the above named negroes and all their
future increase, be divided into five equal lotts, to be made equal as
hereafter directed and not be sold at all but be given as follows. Item .
I give and bequeath one lott of the said negroes to my son David, if they
divide as above in five lotts, but should he keep Delia and her present and
future increases as his proportion of the said negroes, then and in that
case the balance of said negroes, Viz, Kize, Sarah, Sam, Lett, Easter,
Daniel, Charles, Milly, Nicea, Synthia, Julian, Willis, and Charity with
all their future increase to be put into four equal divisions as afore said
and given as follows, Viz, Item, One equal lott of the above negroes I give
and bequeath to my son Stephen BOWLES and his heirs and assignees forever.
Item, one other equal lott of the above negroes I give and bequeath unto
my son Robert BOWLES and his heirs and as
signees forever. Item, I lend the use of one other equal lott of said
negroes to my daughter Sarah A .TURPIN during her natural life, but in case
she shall have an heir or heirs of her body begotten then and in that case,
I give said division of the above negroes to her and her heir or heirs, but
should my daughter not leave such living heir or heirs of her body
begotten, then and in that case said division of said negroes so lent unto
my said daughter Sarah .TURPIN to return to those of my children, Viz,
Stephen or Robert BOWLES or their heirs and Mourning SANDUSKY and her heirs
to be equally divided among them and David BOWLES and his heirs. Item, I
lend one equal lott of said negroes to the use of my daughter Mourning
SANDUSKY during her natural life and after her decease, I give the whole of
the said division of negroes and all their future increase to my said
daughter Mourning SANDUSKYS three children, Viz, Sally, Betsy and Isaac
SANDUSKY or the survivors of them or their heir
s begotten of their bodies share and share alike to them & their heirs
forever. Item, Whereas my son Hughes BOWLES is now settled on the west
end of the tract of land on which I now live and which is to be his after
the death of my wife Hanna, my will is that he keep quiet and peaceable
possession of his house and that part of the plantation which he now
occupies and free access to wood for firing and timber for the use of
plantation. My wish is that my son Jesse continues on the plantation and
manage for his mother my said wife Hannah, but should they disagree, then
my will is that my said son Jesse should his possession where he
now lives, and have laid off to him his full proportion of the tillable
land, pastures, meadows and orchard according to the number of hands worked
on the place and hold quiet possession of the same until the whole falls to
him. Item, after my wife Hannah decease it is my will that the whole
household and kitchen furniture, implements of husban
dry and stock of every kind with every article of my estate not already
disposed of be sold and every lott of the negroes above mentioned, be made
equal to the other, out of the money arising out of the said sales by
applying the money where there is any deficiency in any one lott, and after
each lott of negroes is made equal, then the balance of said money to be
divided among all my children share and share alike to them and their heirs
& assignees forever. And lastly, I do appoint my three sons, David,
Stephen and Hughes BOWLES Executors of this my last will and testament. In
witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal, this 29th
day of March, 1820, in presence of:

This Joseph BOWLES was the son of Jesse BOWLES & Hannah PERKINS. Actually
it isn't a will, but an inventory of his estate, and I don't know if he had
any children, or if he ever married. He died in the War of 1812, and
family history has recorded that he was scalped by Indians, which resulted
in his death.

This inventory of the Estate of Joseph BOWLES, deceased. Cash received of
the paymaster of the First Regiment of K.N. Militia for the service of
Joseph BOWLES deceased, eighty dollars, twenty five cents, it being the
only property of said BOWLES either real or personal. June 7th, 1813

Wills my property real and personal in State of Virginia be equally divided
between Gideon
Bowles BUNCH and Hannah Cruse BUNCH, orphans of Pouncy BUNCH, late of
Wilkes Co.GA. deceased.
Names negroes George, Ben, Savory, Kitty and Libby and stock of cattle,
hogs, and sheep and household furniture, and 350 acres more or less, and a
bond given by John LYNCH and Edmund H.POOR for $623.00 on demand dated Apr
20, 1819, with several credits on the back of said bond amounting to
$204.00 and three negroes in this state by name Wilbam, Sophia, and Hannah
now in possession of Widow Sarah BUNCH, Mother of Gideon and Hannah BUNCH.
Made david BUNCH of this place and Thomas HUGHES of State of Virginia,
Fluvanna Co., my executors.

Sarah BOWLES
In Name of God Amen: I Sarah BOWLES of the Co. of Goochland Va. do make
and ordain this my last
will and testament--revoking all other will or wills to witt: I give to
Elizabeth BOWLES, my sister, Mary,
Jenney, Barnet, John Benjamin and Littleton [and] the room she now weaves
in and half the kitchen
furniture half the sitting room chairs half the sheep and half the hogs. I
lend my old oxen and cattle
to be appraised after my death and the value of same to be divided equally
between Gideon Bowles BUNCH
and Hannah Cruse BUNCH after marriage or death of said Elizabeth.
I give to sister Nancy BOWLES "the other half of the money received
from sale of cart and plows is to
pay my last debts"--the balance left, if any, to go to Nancy BOWLES.
Names "My Negro man Gabriel--it is my will my Executors find him a
good home and the money he may
procure for his labor be taken care of to support him during his life if
needed and if any left to be equally
divided between Gideon Bowles BUNCH and Hannah Cruse BUNCH after decease of
said Gabriel.]
Names Gideon Bowles BUNCH to rec. bed room furniture---if he dies before he
receives it---to go to Hannah Cruse BUNCH.
Names Sister Mary MALLORY'S three daughters, Charity, Nancy, and Virginia
to receive it if both of the above died before they get it.
I give Gideon Bowles BUNCH and Hannah Cruse BUNCH children of Pouncy BUNCH
and Sarah MALLORY, my moiety of my father Gideon BOWLES'S estate-----Siby,
George, Benjamin, and Kitty, (slaves) and future increase----should they
die before of age then I give the aforesaid Legacy to my sister Molly
MALLORY'S three daughters by Stephen MALLORY, Charity, Nancy and Virginia.
My desire is that my moiety of that part of my fathers estate to Clayburn
and William BOWLES is for the benefit of Gideon Bowles BUNCH and Hannah
C.BUNCH or if they die to three daughters of Sister MALLORY.
It is my desire that of my executors that David BUNCH shall have no
management of the before mentioned Legacy.
Makes sisters Elizabeth and Nancy BOWLES executrixes and William and John
HUGHES my Executors.

THOMAS BOALS (undated, but other wills on page are from 1798-1818) Being in
sick and in low condition, I give my watch to my brother Robert Boals in PA;
to my brother John Boals the thin clothes with the new leather breeches, a
buckskin not yet made up, two pair of worsted stockings, one fine hat, and
my bay mare; to my sister Margaret Boals my silver buckles; and to James
Boals, minor son of John Boals, my saddlebags. I leave to my brother
(in-law) Thomas McClure a blue suit, a suit still in PA, a shirt and hat,
and a brown mare, and Moses McClure, minor son of Thomas McClure, my saddle
and bridle.
I am not sure who parents of Thomas R.BOWLES was. I assume because he says
he was SON of David BOWLES deceased, and bequeaths to the make heirs of his
brother Nelson BOWLES, that he was the son of David BOWLES & Winnie RICE.
Thomas Bowles
I Thomas BOWLES son of David BOWLES deceased of Bourbon County and State of
Kentucky being at this time in a weak state of health, but of sound mind
and disposing memory which I feel thankful to the great disposer of all
good taking into mind the mortality of life and that it is allotted to all
the human race to die to make this my last will and testament
hereby revoking all former wills made by me and do hereby dispose of the
property with which it has pleased God in his goodness to bless me with.
That is to say first my Executor hereafter named do pay and discharge all
my just debts as well as my funeral expenses.
Secondly I do hereby give and bequest to my loving wife Nancy one bed,
bedstead and clothing whichever she may choose to keep one falling leaf
table, also the cupboard furniture, also one yearling filley and one milk
cow which ever she may choose of the cows. The above articles named to be
considered as being the absolute property of my wife aforesaid__as well as
the potmettle.
Thirdly it is my will that the balance of my personal property be sold at
public sale by my Executor except the negro which to be disposed of in the
following manner to wit. If my wife should choose to keep house and wants
to keep the negro girl Mima, she is to be allowed to do so as long as she
remains a widow and it is also my will that my Executor shall take
possession of my negro boy Barnaby and hire him out for the best price he
can get. The money making for his keep what may be absolutely necessary to
be applied to the use of my wife during her life and what may not be ?????
for her purpose to be let ??????to be disposed of as thereafter stated to
wit: At the death of my wife or her intermarriage with any other man then
the negro and maul even of the money that may be in the hands of my
Executor at the death or marriage of the aforesaid is to be equally divided
amongst the male heirs of my brother Nelson BOWLES ???? mays appropriated.
Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my loving friend Henry PARKER the sum of
one hundred dollars.
Fifthly, I do hereby appoint my truly friend Henry PARKER as my Executor to
execute this my last will and testament In witness whereof I have hereunto
set my hand and seal this 16th day of September 1822.

This last will and testament of Thomas BOLWES deceased being proved in open
court by the oath of Aquilla PARKER and Harkin BRANHAM subscribing
