DOGS THAT TRACKED BEATTIE TO BE GIVEN NEW SCENT TODAY
Hillsville, Va., April 1. --Two bloodhounds were today set upon the trail of Sidna Allen and his nephew, Wesley Edwards. Though given the best trail found so far, the heavy rain is thought to have washed away the scent, and at nightfall the posse had met with no success. The trail was given at a natural cave, where on Saturday a supply of rations and blankets were abandoned by the outlaws in the sudden flight. The detectives secured information which tomorrow will set the dogs upon a new track.
Scipio Gray, who lives in the Fancy Gap section, reported that the two outlaws had appeared near his home yesterday. The report brought by Gray was corroborated by Alexander McGraw, who lives nearby, and who declared he saw the fleeing men. Both agreed that the outlaws were headed toward the home of Hubbard Easter, about a mile and a half from Floyd Allen's house. The bloodhounds being used by the posse are the same used in the Beattie case at Richmond. The hounds were taken by rail to Mount Airy, N. C. and were brought northward on the Hillsville road to Sugar Leaf mountain and Buzzard's Rock section. Detectives have the section well paroled, especially at Buzzard's rock, near where Sidna Allen yesterday held up Fayette Ayres and threatened to kill him.
