| Military Incident | Operations Record Book AIR 28/345 ...Weather fine. The Barrack stores were today
evacuated to "CHIPDEAN" on the CANTERBURY ROAD. The Station was today attacked
by ME 109's , 6 to 12in number.flying at about 1500 feet, at 11:25 hours.
Eighteen bombs, the largest being 250 lbs, were dropped in line straddling the
Officer's mess, the one undamaged hangar, the Camp and the old HQ
Officebuildings and across the north side of the aerodrome, the last falling in
HAWKINGE VILLAGE. Casualties were:- 1 soldier killed, 6 soldiers,3 civilians, 2
airmen and 1 officer slightly wounded. Four cases only to hospital. A number of
civilians, probably 6, were killed in a direct hit on a civilian shelter in
HAWKINGE VILLAGE.
The aerodrome defences came into immediate action. No damage was sustained by defence equipment. A direct hit demolished part of the hutted accomodation called "THE HOSTEL", and another hit destroyed the Station Headquarters Office building. |
