(more photos Mt. Pisgah page 2) Mount Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church was established on June 20, 1840. This pretty little white church and it’s beautifully kept cemetery is located four miles east of Duck Hill, Mississippi just off Hwy. 404 in Montgomery County. Mount Pisgah is one of the oldest churches in Montgomery County. The land for Mount Pisgah was donated by Elder John Prevatte Taylor and his wife Hughanna Carr Taylor. At the time the church was established the area was known as Bennett’s Settlement and was in the Carroll County Territory. Elder John Prevatte Taylor came to this area from Washington County, Ala in 1836. Elder Taylor was ordained in 1812 in Sandy Creek Baptist Church in Butler County, Kentucky. In 1840 the Baptist in Bennett’s Settlement by letter of request obtained the following brethren, Elder Simpson Parks, Eli Lankford, and Francis Baker who were organized into a Presbytery brethren. Francis Baker presided, Luke Robertson, clerk examined and organized the following Brethren and Sisters as the first members into the church.

written by Evelyn Bell Crouch. There is a homecoming service at Mt Pisgah Church on the 4th Sunday in May every year. I am told that this is really a big gathering. |
