Jacob was most likely born in Pennsylvania and migrated with his parents first to Frederick Co., MD and then to Franklin Co., VA, probably around 1782. His father first appears in the Bedford Co. land records in 1782. This part of Bedford Co. became incorporated into Franklin Co. in 1786. Jacob jr married Barbara Dillman around 1782. She was probably from Bedford/Franklin county, since there is evidence of a Dillman family in this area. Jacob remained in Franklin Co. until early 1820, when he and his family (all of his known children were married at this time) moved to Preble Co., Ohio.

Joel Cephus Flora was able to only identify one of Jacob's offspring, his eldest son Jacob. Three additional children have subsequently been identified.
