In the 1782 partial settlement of John Flory's estate, Salome was reported to be married to John Kissel and living in Lancaster Co. In the 1790 census, two men named John Kissel were living in Lancaster county, John Kissil in Elizabeth town and John Kissle in Warwick Twp. Three entries away from John Kissle was Fredk Kissle. In the 1800 census, John Kissil of Elizabeth town is gone, but John Kissel and Frederick Kissel are still living in Warwick Twp. John is missing from the 1810 census, but listed adjacent to Frederick is George and Frederick jr. In the 1820 census, in Warwick Twp., are Philip, John, Frederick, George and Frederick jr. They are listed consecutively. By 1830, only Frederick (age 50-60, probably Frederick jr.) and a young John Kissel (age 20-30) are found in Warwick Twp. First of all, it seems obvious that the Warwick Kissel's are related to each other, although given the age ranges of these early censuses, it is difficult to determine the father-son relationships. Certainly, Frederick is the father of Frederick jr. It would appear also that Frederick and John are brothers, since they both appear in 1790 and in the 1820 census, and both listed as being over 45. Is this John Kissel the husband of Salome Flory? Based on what we know from the census, it is impossible to definitely know. This John appears to have raised a large family, in 1790 he had one son and five daughters. The 1800 census adds two more sons. By 1820, he appears to have been a widower, with a younger man and woman living with him, along with at least one child. Sources: |
