In the 1782 partial settlement of John Flory's estate, May (Maria) was
married to Michael Shell, a tailor, and was living in Lancaster County.
In the 1790 census, there was no one named Michael Shell living in Lancaster
Co., but there was a Michael Shelly in Lancaster County, in Rapho Twp.
Furthermore, he was listed next to Stophel Forey, who most likely is Chrisoffel
Flory, who was married to Maria's youngest sister, Rachel. They had no
children, according to the census.
In the 1800 census, Michael Shelly and his wife have living with them,
two males between the ages of 10 & 15, three females less than 9 years
old, and one female between the ages of 15 & 25. In the 1810 census,
they are again living alone with no other people listed in their household.
Thus, it is not clear whether they had any children of their own or not.
Neither Michael nor Maria (Mary) are listed in either the 1820 or 1830
censuses. But, in the 1820 census, three new Shelly families appear in
the census in Lancaster Co. Two of the families, based on the age distributions,
probably are three generation families, that is, children, parents and
grandparents. Thus, one of these families may include Michael and/or Maria.
