Joseph Flory III was born in 1752 in Rapho township, Lancaster Co., and moved to Paxtang township with his parents in 1759. He served in the Continental Army during the Revolution, possibly serving two tours of duty (1778 - 1779 and 1781 - 1782). Joseph appeared on the tax lists of Lower Paxtan township from 1785 until his death in January, 1796. Joseph was only 42 when he died, leaving his wife pregnant with their ninth child. Following the death of their father, the children changed the spelling of their name to Flora. Eva died in 1804 at the age of 46. Shortly after his father's death, the second son Elisha (Elijah) appears to have moved to Halifax County in southern Virginia. Two of his sisters (Elizabeth and Sophia) followed him to the same area, probably after their mother died. The rest of the children remained in Pennsylvania. |
