29th Generation

4461. John SPENCER117 was born on 22 Jun 1822 in Pitcon, Ontario, Canada. He died on 30 Apr 1904 in Norland, Ontario, Canada. -- From a personal letter -"The subject of this sketch was born on the 22nd
June 1822 directly after which my father Spencer moved to the Township of
Murray, county of Northumberland moving on lot 31 concession 4 of said
Township. Where I first became acquainted with life in the woods; this part of
the county being heavily timbered with hardwood and pine. Having went to
school at odd times after arriving at school age; I went regularly in the year
1838 up till Sept 19th, 1839. At this time getting and education was much more
difficult and expensive than at the present time. For instance, a section
wishing to have a school, it was first necessary to have 20 ratepayers and each
one had to pay $2.00 per scholar and funish their quota of wood, then only
having school 3 or 6 months in winter.

On Sept.19th, '39 I became apprenticed to Abijah Squires, general shoemaker
(Town of Brighton) where I put in 4 years learning my trade. The terms of
apprenticeship being $2 per month for the first year, $2.50/mo. second year,
$3.00 the third year, $5.00 for the fourth year. I stopped with Mr. Squires
till March 1843. Having finished my apprenticeship I went home and began work
for myself where I became acquainted with Elizabeth Terrill which acquaintance
soon ripened into love and we were married on April 6th, 1844. Taking up
housekeeping, it was not long till we had a pledge of our love in the person of
a bright baby girl which we named Margaret Matilda (being born on 9th Feb.
1845) who at the time of writing is the wife of Isaac Allen Tripp of the
Township of Bexley, Co. of Victoria. In 1846 Father Terrill moved to the
Township of Ops, Victoria Co. where he died in 1846. In 1847 on the 30th day
of Dec, James was born. On the 15th of August 1850 Almon Bristol was born. In
the year '53 Thomas was born, in this year Stephens Lake broke away when Jake
Herrington and Lewis Shearer lost their lives being carried away by the flood.
In the year 1855 I moved up to Cambray in Victoria Co. In the following year I
went on my place east of Cambray being lot 4 in 3rd concession, Fenelon Twp.
Here Alletta Jane was born in the winter of '57. I stopped in Fenelon for 3
years where John Clark was born, when we again moved to the Township of Ops
where in 1861 Fred Alex was born on April 27th. Our third daughter Sarah Maria
was born on March 15, 1864. In the year 1867 Ben was born on the 1st July.
This being about the time our national holiday was established, Uncle James
being away at the time attending yearly meeting at Pickering."

Spencer, grandson, by Ralph Spencer, another grandson. copy from H.
Spencer,#104 - 1822 Eaglesham Ave., Weyburn, Sk. S4H 3A8

-- Children: Margaret, James, Almon, Thomas, Alletta, John, Fred, Sarah, Ben,
Elizabeth

-- 1901 census has him living with son, Thomas at Lutterworth

-- The exact date of his second marriage is not yet established. Apparently
married a widow or perhaps a girl who already had a child. Elizabeth Spencer
was born to this second marriage.

-- The two youngest, Ben and Sarah, of the first marriage left home at an early
age. Family tradition says they could not get along with the step-sister whose
name might have been Angeline. There is some question if Nancy Bowen was
John's second wife as she is buried in Barry, Ontario beside a John Spencer who
may or may not be our ancestor.

-- Elizabeth Spencer did marry Herman Wicks and moved west to live south of
Weyburn while her half-brother, Ben lived north of Weyburn. The Wicks family
has developed a history of their branch.

putting the second marriage date possibly late 1875. Elizabeth (Terrill)
