9. Samuel LEWIS¹ died in Jan 1739. He was born in Westerly, Washington Co., RI. From HISTORICAL SKETCH OF RICHMOND, RI, by J.R. Irish, "The colonial records show that for many years the lands in Richmond were quite slowly purchased by settlers. To hasten their sale, the General Assembly appointed a committee to dispose of vacant lands held by authority of the colony. This committee sold a large tract June 28, 1709, known in the records as the Shannock Purchase. This tract extended from the Exeter line on the north to Pawcatuck River on the south. On the east it was bounded by Beaver River; and on the west by a meridian passing at the west end of the cemetery, at the Wood River Church. The purchasers of this tract were 27 in number, amoug them Samuel Lewis. He owned land on what was called the "Lewis Nect". From NARRAGANSETT HISTROICAL REGISTER, Vol. V, p. 278, states "Samuel Perry b. 1695, was styled the third son in his father's Will, by which he was left land purchased in Lewis Nect of Samuel Lewis, containing 130."

On March 5, 1692, he deeded 100 acres to Jane Babcock, wife of Job, and Job declared he had given his wife full power to purchase the land, disowning ay rights therein for himself.

August 5, 1723, Samuel Lewis wrote his will, which was probated Feb 1, 1739. The executor was friend John Maxon, son of Joseph. This gave to wife Joanna, 5 poiunds yearly for life, "which I promised to give her for signing a deed of land sold Henry Knowles" and 400 pounds to laid out of estate for her to have the interest of for comforable maintenance, etc.; to son Samuel, 5 shillings, he "having had"; to son Jonathan, 5 shillings; to daughter Joanna Tanner, 5 shillings; to daugher Sarah's son, John Fordice, 100 pounds, to lay out in lands by executor. To son Samuel's children, son Jonathan's children, and daughter Joanna Tanner's children, the rest of the estate at the ages of twenty-one and eighteen, and at decease of wife, they have what is left of household goods and 400 pounds. Inventory was 2,500 pounds, 17 shillings, 7 pence, including money and apparel, bonds, notes, pewter, mare, cow, etc.

February 28 1738-39, Then received the full of inventory of John Maxon, Executor to the will of Samuel Lewis, late deceased of Westerly which was Proven in the Town of RI and they Disallowed the above s. Will. I say received per me Jonathan Lewis Administrator, signed sealed and delieverd in the presents of Joseph Maxson, ye 3rd, Elisha Clarke.

Westerly, RI, Feb, ye 26th, 1738-39. To the Honroable Town Council of Westerly these lins are to desire you that your honours would be pleased to Give My Son Jonathan Lewis ye Letter of Administration upon his Fathers Estate for I myself are not capable of riding and doing of business by Reason of age and in doing of which you will oblige yours to Serve. Signed by her mark, Joanna Lewis. Witnessed by John Maxson ye 4th and Benjamin Burdick.

Joanna (?) died in 1734. Samuel LEWIS and Joanna (?) had the following children:

55	ii.	Jonathan LEWIS was born in 1690 in Westerly, Washington Co., RI. He died in 1783 in Exeter, Washington Co., RI.
56	iii.	Joanna LEWIS.
57	iv.	Sarah LEWIS.
