McKeesport Fire May 22, 1976 Tom O'Neil writes "This disaster took place when sparks from men working on the old Famous took off. I had just become a member of council and not long before this we had to layoff a number of firemen. But this fire took off so fast and got so out of hand so quickly that nothing could have stopped it. Inside 10 minutes it was full going and we had fire departments in from all over the area. Only the width of Market Street stopped it from going down Fifth Avenue and that was just barely. It destroyed the Elks building along Market and would have gone further had there been any buildings close. The firefighters did a tremendous job."
