Hoak Drug Store. Tom O'Neil writes "Street cars turned around here going to Glassport and from Pittsburgh via Dravosburg. I can remember streetcars running between McK and Glassport and from Port through Duquesne past Krennywoood to Pittsburgh and from Port via Mansfield Bridge to Pittsburgh. Seem to barely remember them running up Evans Avenue from 5th; think they went up to Franklin Market but not sure. Know they went from 5th up Sinclair and made circle down Locust back to Fifth. Before ending what I miss the most and always will of home is the people; so many nationalities and races and for the most part the average people got along well; sure not perfect but better than most places I think even today." Editorial comment: I agree with you 100% on your last sentence Tom and that is based on my experiences being raised in the multi-ethnicity of McKeesport, Pa.
Johnny Mayer writes "I found this old photo of St. Mary's German Catholic church at the McKeesport Heritage Ctr. The church was located at the corner of Locust and Olive Streets. This was taken in 1908 when the building was completed. Unfortunately, the Diocese of Pittsburgh merged several McKeesport churches together and this one was closed in October 1993. Instead of letting this beautiful building decay, they decided to tear it down in 1997 because a buyer could not be found. I went to this church from 1981 to 1989. I know many "porters" will remember it -- especially the beautiful, tall bell tower. I also have some PICS of the interior that I will send later."
Johnny Mayer writes "I also found this Daily News article dated Feb. 1997 when they were tearing down the building. This made me very sad."
