NOTES; Theophilus, Martha and children left Georgia about 1861 with a group of people headed for Indian Territory in Oklahoma. However Theophilus became Ill and family members living in Arkansas persuaded him to stay there. One family source suggests that he became a rice farmer. While another insists that he was a rancher. I have been through parts of Oklahoma that had many rice farms. I suggest that he may have done both.

"Secret societies flourish here as in other localities of this favored section. Bellville Lodge No. 35, F. & A. M., was organized at Bellville, November 6, 1867; with the following officers.........This lodge was removed to Lockesburg about 1872. They now have a membership of about forty, with the following roster of officials: T.J. King, master; John Shott, S.W.; J. W. Locke, J. W.; E. Smith, S. D.; Alex Little, J.D."
p. 226-226:
"Alex Little is a practical, go-ahead farmer and stock-raiser, and fully appreciates the comforts of a competence gained by individual efforts. His birth occurred in 1831, in Carroll County, Ga., but his father, Theophilus Little, was a South Carolinian, born July 26, 1810. He was married, in his native State, to Miss Martha Lowry, and a short time after his marriage he removed to Georgia, where he made his home until 1861, at which time he took up his abode in Texas, coming after the cessation of hostilities to Sevier County, Ark. After living here three years, they removed to Crawford County, where the father closed his eyes in death, March 26, 1875. His widow returned to South Carolina and died in July 1888, having been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church for sixty years, her husband having been connected with that denomination for forty-six or forty-seven years. He was a farmer and stock-raiser, and a son of Josiah Little, who was probably born in South Carolina, and died in Carroll County, Ga. where he had filled the office of sheriff for many years, his son, Theophilus, acting as his deputy. The maternal grandfather, Charles Lowry, was born in Virginia, and died in Cass County, Ga., about 1872, at the age of eighty-two years. He was a soldier in the Mexican War, was wounded several times, and until his death carried seven bullets in his body. He was helpless for many years. The subject of this sketch is the third of fourteen children, seven sounds and four daughters now living, and his early days were spent on a farm and attending the common schools. At the age of twenty-one years he began farming for himself, but in 1857 Margaret J. Ferguson, a daughter of Andrew and Dorothea Ferguson, because his wife, and in time the mother of his twelve children, five of whom are sons; of these three daughters and five sons are deceased. She was born in Calhoun County, Ga., in 1839 and shortly after her marriage, and about the same time as her parents, she came to Sevier County, Ark. Her father died in Howard County in 1886, his wife dying in 1877, both having been members of long standing of the Missionary Baptist church. Upon coming to Sevier County, Ark., Mr. Little settled on a farm one and one-half miles north of Lockesburg and there now owns a fine farm of 320 acres, 175 being under cultivation. In addition to tilling the soil he raises considerable stock, and has become well known throughout this region as a successful man in both enterprises. In April, 1861, he joined the Nineteenth Arkansas Infantry, and served almost continuously until the close of the war, and while a nurse in the hospital at Little Rock he was captured, but soon after managed to effect his escape, and came to Washington, where he was made forage master in Gen. Kirby Smith's cavalry, and operated in Southwest Arkansas and Louisiana until the close of the war. He surrendered at Marshall, Tex., and returned home. He is a Democrat; has been a member of the A. F. & A. M. for the past eighteen years, and he and his wife have long been members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, their two eldest children also being members."

Pioneering by Floriece Love
On the wall in my living room hangs a picture of my grandfather and grandmother; he with a long beard, she sitting primly by his side with straight back in neatly folded hands. They were early Oklahoma pioneers mother was born in Indian Territory and my grandfather was in the run for land in Oklahoma Territory, gaining homestead near what was to become the Madill Oklahoma.
Beside this picture is another of my mother and father, standing shortly after their marriage in front of their first home. My mother is in a long home spun dress, father in a suit and tie and very pointed shoes, their house is a cabin with open doors no screens, set on a foundation of cyprus logs with wooden steps leading up to the door. They had moved to Longwood Oklahoma to begin their teaching careers in a two-room schoolhouse. Father taught the upper class which consisted of anyone who knew how to write or had the desire to learn how. Some of his students were large enough men to whip the Teacher if they had it in their minds to do so. Mother taught the little ones next door. The tradition of pioneering extended into the field of education. And so on down to my generation.
Adventures by Floriece Love
The year is 1950 and World War II is over but the Cold War continues, and so does my husband's military career. Orders are received for him to transfer to Guam, family may accompany sponsor. Thus I pack up the family, a six-week-old baby girl, a two year-old daughter, a seven year-old son, and we're off on an adventure. This entails a ride from Tennessee to California, in an un-air-conditioned car, in the heat of the summer. The baby gets diarrhea, and this is before disposable diapers. Judith breaks out in the heat and cries continuously, son Sid sits silently in the backseat suffering, his only comment was, as he leaned toward us was "I wish I didn't belong to this family." There was to be a six-week delay before the family could follow sponsor, so I left the children with my mother in Los Angeles for a few days and followed my husband to San Francisco to the port of embankment and waved him good bye, with the words, "see you soon honey." Driving back down the coast I turned on the radio to hear that War ad been declared in Korea. My husband was at sea and I was stranded for a year awaiting orders to join him.
At the end of that year, staff officers were given the privilege of fixing up some old Quonset huts, that had been abandoned by the Navy. Turning them into temporary quarters and providing a place for their families. I received the news that we could sail with great happiness. We were on our way! Fourteen days at sea with three seasick children, who were encased in life jackets for lifeboat drills, made my anticipation of landfall exceedingly great! I have never been enticed into taking a cruise since.
My husband met us at the dock, he was driving an old jeep, wearing a big smile and greeting us with "honey you will be so happy." As ranking officer I got my first pick of the Quonsets, and I got the only rat proof one available! My castle awaited! I could hardly wait and sure enough it did look great. He had scrounged up a two-burner kerosene stove, five army cots and had made a table and benches from some old planks. We were in business. It even had a bathroom of sorts, a shower (without stall), a toilet (with a pull down chain.) We could manage, our family was together.
I went to bed that night in a state of bliss. About 2:00 AM I got up to go to the toilette, half asleep, I turned on the light and as I turned around and started to sit down, I noticed that someone had been there before me! Wouldn't these kids ever learn to flush the toilet? I started to sit down and yanked the chain, and jumped sky high! The kids hadn't been here, that was a rat! Jumping right at me fangs bared. So much for the rat proofed Quonset! I made a dash back to the bedroom, I tried to wake my husband with honey there's a rat in the toilet. He only mumbled, flush it down. I thought "not on your life." I crawled back into bed pulled the sheet of over my head and trembled until light of day. I was still there when my son came in eyes wide and shook his Daddy and said "Daddy there's a mouse in the potty", this brought father to the rescue, and the rat was flushed. Our sewage pipe ran down the cliff to the sea, the jungle rat had climbed from the beach up the pipe to our rat proof cabin, like the itsy bitsy spider that ran up the spout and down again.
Pioneering days were not over. Now I understand Guam is a big resort area, airports and hotels and all luxury accommodations required by the rich and famous. It might be fun to go back again.

Stories told by Dora Little Hall
Her father David Lowery Little came to Indian Territory in Oklahoma from Logan County Arkansas. He was married in Arkansas to Mary Jane Smith and their first four children were born there. They arrived in Indian Territory between September 1880 when their fourth child was born and February 1883 when there fifth child, a son, David was born. They settled at Oakland Indian Territory, which was near what is now Madill Oklahoma. When Indian Territory (Oklahoma) was open for settlement on April 12, 1889, David Little and his son Tom made the run for land, and claimed land near what is now Guthrie, Oklahoma. (I believe it was a 160-acre claim.) History records settlements of 5000 people within six hours at the locations of Guthrie, Enid, and Oklahoma City. It must have been quite a day! To my knowledge the family never resided at this location. My mother, Dora Little was born in Oakland in 1889, and it was sometime after this date that the family moved to a farm near Wetumka, Oklahoma. It was at this location my mother recalled her childhood memories.
My mother would never go to see a western movie; she said it was too true to life, as she knew it when she was growing up. Her father farmed, raised horses and a lot of hell. She recalls that outlaws roamed the land, and remembers them stopping by her father's place to change horses. Her youngest brother, Dave, was killed on horseback; he was running one of the racehorses. The horse swung around a tree and his head was thrown against a limb, he was killed immediately. According to her mother, Dave was a gentle son, Tom was the ruffian. David Little and son, Tom, would ride into town on a weekend, spend the weekend in town, and come riding home on Sunday night. Mother says she could hear them coming down the road, shooting their pistols in the air, yelling and raising hell. She confided that she was sure there had been brawls in town that had resulted in the death of some of the participants. Of this however, I have no verification.
Stories told by Dora Little Hall
Tom died a violent death. He married and half-breed Creek woman named Inez. At the time an interracial marriage with an Indian was considered shocking. Tom and Aunt Inez lived in Dustin, I recall going to see them, Aunt Inez would be sitting on the front porch in her rocking chair, an Indian blanket over her shoulders, smoking a cob pipe. I was fascinated by her, and somewhat fearful. She and Tom had three daughters, who were the most beautiful girls I had ever seen, their olive skin and dark hair and eyes made them beautiful beyond compare (in my young eyes.) Mother and the oldest daughter, Bess, were about the same age, and formed a close attachment that lasted all their lives. In the 1980's Bess came to visit me in Fort Myers. By this time, it was very popular to be part Indian, and she took great pride in her heritage, and was quite an expert on Indian art and history.
Tom was a deputy sheriff in Duncan and had arrested an outlaw. Tom had the man handcuffed in the backseat of his car and was driving him to jail, the man broke loose, and managed to grab a gun (I believe it was Tom's). Tom was shot in the back of the head and was killed instantly. This event occurred when I was a young child, and I still remember going to the funeral. It was all the family could do to control Aunt Inez, who was determined to join her husband in his coffin, and go to the grave with him. I was told it was an Indian tradition.
The death of his two sons left David Little with six daughters. According to my mother, he held no regard for the feminine sex. They were created for the use of man. There was no need to educate them, they did not need frivolous things, and luxuries (Christmas gifts were unheard of, clothing and necessary items were made at home, travel was prohibited as women were to be kept at home, and were not to be trusted out on their own.) Women wore chattels, and the three older girls were sent into the fields to do the manual labor. Life was hard. My mother said that Mary Jane, her mother, was a saint. She never complained, played the role of the compliant wife, while doing her best to protect the girls and to provide for them. It was not a case of poverty. David Little was considered a prosperous landowner. Women were simply considered property, without rights or needs. Perhaps this is an unjust assumption, but neither my mother nor her two younger sisters that I knew would ever discuss their childhood. It is something they wanted to forget.
Stories told by Dora Little Hall
The three older girls spent their youth in the field, but grandmother Little wanted something else for the younger 3. They craved an education, they were intelligent girls, and wanted something else from life. There were no schools in the county where they lived, and grandmother Little finally persuaded David to let her take the younger three into Holdenville, Oklahoma in order that day could be sent to school. They rented a house, and Dave stayed on the farm. Mother said this was one of the happiest years of her life. She was enrolled in school; the older girls, Viola and Mary took secretarial training. After one year, however, David came for them, saying he wasn't going to live on the farm without his wife and daughters. Mary had however, in this brief time obtained the skills that enabled her, at a later date to get the job in law office of Frank Davis, and later became his wife. Viola met and married Charlie Morgan in Holdenville. They had two sons, and live their entire married life in Holdenville, and became a respected and successful members of the community.
Stories told by Dora Little Hall
Mother tells me that when they returned from the year in Holdenville, Mary set up a tent in their front yard, and opened a school for illiterate men and boys in the area. She is attributed with opening the first rural school in that part of the County. How long she taught there and I don't know. I do know she went from there to Wewonka to work for Frank Davis. Mother in the meantime yearned for schooling. The older girls were now married and away from home. Her sister Delia head married a coal miner Jerd Fretwell and they were living in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Three children were born to this couple. And at the time of birth of each Delia requested that mother be allowed to come to Henryetta to help with the chores. It was understood that mother would be allowed to enroll in school while in Henryetta so she was willing to go. It was no playground however. She performed the household services, and was kept under close scrutiny, as all women were wanton. Women at this time were appearing in gym class and bloomers. When Jerd heard of this mother was taken from the school and sent back to the farm where she could be controlled! Thus ended the educational experience.
Stories told by Dora Little Hall
Minnie had married and man named, Miller. rumor has it that he was wanted by the law, and that there was a bounty on his head. He and Minnie had two children, Katie and Lee Miller. I never knew their father, he was shot by a bounty hunter while the children were very small. Katie and Mother were of the same age, and were life Long friends. Minnie always seemed unhandy to me, but Katie was a laughing red head that was fun to be around, Lee Miller a hard-working and responsible individual. I remember them with a degree of fondness.

Nettie met Pete Richards, they owned a farm near Ada, Oklahoma. I recall visiting them as a child. And Nettie always worked hard, and I believe her life continued in much the same mold as her childhood. It was great fun to go to her house and watch her cook over her wood stove. I remember she made her own sausage, canned her own meat in glass jars, had coal oil lamps to light the rooms at night, I slept upstairs on a iron bedstead in a room with flowered wallpaper. There were always children to play with, as and Nettie had five children. Viola was near my age, and we had fun in the fields and playing in the yard until dinnertime. Their son, Boomer, was retarded, and spent his life at home under the tender care of aunt Nettie, but I never recall hearing her laugh.
Stories told by Dora Little Hall
My mother was the last to leave home. By this time rural schools were beginning to appear, being staffed by traveling teachers. My father Eli Hall, came to Wewoka from Missouri to teach, and took his room and board at Dave Little's home. Mother was allowed to attend school, and they subsequently married. The moved to Lawnwood, Oklahoma where my father taught in a two room country school. Mother took some courses from the normal school and got a teacher's certificate. The two of them then taught together, my father teaching the big boys on one side of the building, mother teaching the little ones on the other side. My brother nine years my senior accompanied them to school.
Stories told by Dora Little Hall
With the oil boom in Oklahoma, my father gave up teaching, moved to Okemah were I was born, and enter the oil and gas business. Small town life in Oklahoma was restrictive, almost everything was a sin, dancing, and of course Sex. The primary social activity consisted of the monthly embroidery club, and church services on Sunday. But I remember a happy childhood, never fearful of crime or violence, the doors were never locked, and you certainly knew your neighbors (all of them). Education remained a primary interest of my mother, and she stressed continually the need for me to study and obtain one. Mary, Viola, Dora, all three girls were self-educated. And they did a good job of it. They were socially poised, gracious ladies that maintain an interest in life. I never heard a one of them make a grammatical error, a point to marble when we consider our present day standard of literacy.
Stories told by Dora Little Hall
What now be considered a short jaunt, was in my childhood quite a long journey. Wewoka, Holdenville, Ada, Henryetta, Okemah, thought to be neighboring towns required a full day of travel, and during the Depression years travel was also expensive. Thus there was not a lot of interaction between the sisters and their families. I remember visiting Aunt Mary in the summer for a week at a time, and getting to know my cousins, Frankie, Pauline, and Lauraine. Alice also introduced me to luxury's to which I had not been accustomed, and I took great joy and being part of the social festivities. It was this relationship which changed the direction of my life, so when the time came for me to go to college my family who is suffering in the throes of the depression. Aunt Mary offered me the same education, and I continued in educational field and tell my retirement. The yearning for learning that arose from the bleak intellectual environment of my mother and Aunt Mary was passed along to their children, and I consider the both of them to have been remarkable women. Their past was something they did not relish recalling, rather looking forward with anticipation to the future. In their own way they were pioneer women, and to them I feel deeply indebted.
Signed lots of love and memories

In letter sent to Jesse Little from Florence Love.
I have found in my mother's effects a memorial card from her mother's funeral, which provide some information which you have not previously obtained it reads as follows.
In loving remembrance of
Mary Jane Little
Born December 21, 1846
Died March 20, 1914
Age 87 years 8 months nine days
Gone but not forgotten
Peaceful be thy silent slumber
Peaceful in thy grave so low
Yet again we hope to meet thee
When the day of life is fled
And in heaven with joy to greet thee
