22. Isaac Mount PIRTLE (John Lafayette⁴, Isaac¹) was born in August 1877 in Dekalb County, Tennessee ¹⁰ ^,12 ^,25 ^,26, died on July 8, 1909 in Dekalb County, Tennessee ¹⁰ ^,13 ^,27 and was buried in Whorton Springs Cemetery.

Isaac Mount Pirtle was born Aug. 1877 in Dekalb County, Tennessee. He died July 8, 1909 in Tennessee, a young man of 31 years. Several of his children were quite young when he died and remembered very little about him.

There are several references to the name of "Isaac Mount Pirtle" living in Tennessee. The elder, born some where between 1839 and 1843, is the brother of John Layfayette Pirtle and the uncle to the later, Isaac Mount Pirtle born in 1877. Source records indicate that both, uncle and nephew, used the surname spellings of "Pirtle" and "Purtle", interchangably. There is also a senior Isaac Mount Purtle born about 1819, mostly prominent in Hardeman County, Tennessee, the son of Michael Jr and Mary Pirtle. His son is also named, Isaac Mount Purtle. As far as I can tell, this Isaac is unrelated, directly, to this line.

Isaac's birth, marriage and parentage are noted in the Gene Pool Individual Records--as well as, the LDS IGI Records and Individual Records, with little variation among them. All three documents mention that Isaac was born in 1877, in or of DeKalb TN, father was John or John L. Pirtle and mother was Susan or Susan Jane Young. Two of the three sources, the Genepool Record and the LDS Individual Record mentions his death date as July 8, 1909.

Strangely enough, however, two of these same documents also mention that he married in 1898 to Mary. Tennessee Marriage Records note an I.M. Purtle who married an A.M. Young but, on July 26, 1894 in Warren County, Tennessee. Isaac married Mollie Holt, not Mary, on Sep 25, 1898 in Dekalb County, TN. It's possible that Mollie's first name is Mary or that she went by, Mary. It's also possible that AM Young is the Mary mentioned. The dates are close enough to cause such confusion.

Recent discoveries, however, indicate that Mollie is "Mary Agnes Holt" which would explain Isaac's marriage to a Mary the same year he married Mollie. Source of this information comes from Mollie's Bible Pages.

The 1920 Dekalb County census lists Mollie Pirtle as the 38 year old widowed head of the household. Evidently, she never re-married. It's been said that she stayed single because she didn't want no man coming in and being mean to her children. ²⁷
