HISTORY OF BENTON COUNTY

Zebulon B. Edmiston, retired merchant, of Boonsboro, Ark., is a native of Clark County, Ark., born April 17, 1830. His father, David Edmiston, was born in Tennessee, and came to Arkansas when a lad of thirteen, with his father [who also bore the name of David], and located in what is now Clark County. here david C. Edmiston grew to manhood, and was afterward married to Rebecca Thornton, a natvie of Illinois, moving to Washington County, Ark., in 1835, where he was engaged in farming until his death, in April, 1884. His wife died in August 1882. Zebulon B. spent his youthful days on his father's farm, and received a fair, common-school education. On december 16, 1852, he was married to Miss Eunice Jane Gray, a daughter of Sanford F. Gray, who bore him three sons: James P., David N., and John S. Mr. Edmiston farmed until 1872, when he moved to Boonsboro to give his children the advantages of the schools of that place, and four years later engaged in merchandising, which occupation he successfully carried on until 1884, when he retired from active business life and left his store to the management of his sons. When the Boonsboro Canning and Evaporating Factory was organized, in 1888, Mr. Edmiston became one of the stockholders and did all in his power to further the enterprise.

She married JOHN FRANKLIN PAYNE 30 December 1875 Washington County, Arkansas, son of JOHN PAYNE & MARIAH WHILLOCK [WHEELOCK], he was born 25 Aug 1847 Washington County, Tennessee, died Unknown in Fresno, California.

He was murdered on his fig farm in Fresno, California. The murder was never solved. His son John stayed on the farm/ranch after his death. Fannie was in Texas visiting her daughters Louella Flowers and Eunice Chamnbers when John got murdered. The story goes that John did not believe in banks and he was very wealthy. His lawyer was suppose to be a good friend of his, but when John got murdered the lawyer disappeared also. John always like to take evening walks through his orchards and did so every night. It was during one of these walks that he was hit over the head with many blows and was murdered. His body was not found for awhile, when his son John found his body, then, Fannie was contacted and her and the girls came to California, the she returned to Texas and she died in Louella's home in Texas. It is said that John Jr. never married. It is also said that many years later the lawyer came back and fought John Jr and Hugh Payne, [another son of John's], for the property and the lawyer won. My mother, Sibyl Rae Payne Enders says the Payne's still own land in Arkansas that was passed through the family, but no one can get to it because of some easement the owners of the front land have and they won't let anyone pass through. John Franklin Payne's murder coincided with the death of Joseph Sanford Payne's son James Clarence Payne's death in Arkansas. [John Sr's grandson], He died 17 June 1940, is buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery. But haven't been able to find death date for John or Fanniels deaths. I do know John was dead by 7 Nov 1940 when grandma and grandpa had their 40th wedding anniversary in 1940.
