Endnotes
Rev. Donald Budge, extract from his book: Jura: An Island of Argyll. 1959, McKechnie is a typically Jura form of this surname. Formerly the Gaelic form "MacEacharn" was used. The Jura Bard used both forms: in Gaelic he wrote "Domhnull MacEacharn", in English he wrote "Donald MacKechnie". Another derivation given is "Maceach Thighearn" (son of the horse lord), the "each thighearn" being the official one who was in charge of the horses or cavalry. The name is said to have originated from the southern part of the peninsula of Kintyre, which was the first territory possessed by the MacDonalds who later became the Lords of the Isles, and whose horses and cavalry the MacEachearns had the oversight. The McKechnie's of northern Jura came to that part from Colonsay, the first of them coming to Ardlussa when the McNeills were proprietors there. The McKechnie's from south Jura came to the island about 1800 from Craignish to manage the farm of Tarbet for the Campbells of Jura.
