Walter was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. Due to an unhappy home life, he left home when he was quite young and worked on a ranch, then as a cook in a logging camp, and finally with a wild west show called "The 101 Ranch." He married Doris when she was only 15 years old and still a student at the Old Main Ave. High School. Doris and her parents lived in an apartment house owned by Walter's mother [Mollie]. Walter and his brother Ernest owned a grocery store on Convent St. across the street from their homes on the banks of the San Antonio River. When this property was sold, Walter went to work for Wolff and Marx Department Store where he remained for many years. At the start of World War II, he went to work at Kelly Field AFB as a manager of a warehouse. He retired in 1954 due to ill health. He attended Central Christian Church and belonged to the Masonic Order. He was also a Schreiner. He is buried at Roselawn Cemetery with Doris in the Masonic section.
