The description on page 17 states "The amusement-loving public will readily recognize in the portrait of Mr. C. Shacklett, which appears elsewhere, one of the most popular and successful theatre managers of the South. As proprietor of 'The Washington,' this gentleman has won for himself the good will of a discriminating public by furnishing light, pleasant, legitimate performances for the masses. Since the opening of this theatre, only a few years ago, prosperity has reigned, enabling the proprietor to acquire title to very valuable property fronting the plaza, where he will now erect a handsome theatre to met the demands of the times."
